I wanted something lightweight, quick and simple, with good results. I got it, only with GREAT results. Those concerned with too much bulk may find it annoying but I thought it was rather small and very lightweight. Despite other reviews about a long time to brew I found it to make a stunning cup of coffee in about 30-40 seconds and I think its completely dependent on the grind of the coffee. Those of you who like to brew loose leaf teas may find it appealing also. Cleanup is very easy by simply pulling out the inner metal filter and pouring a little water over it. This is the Keurig of the outdoors, job site, or wherever you want it.

I was looking to reduce my weight, and simplify my cooking system for backpacking.... coffee is non negotiable. Have been using a GSI press mug for almost 10 years, and I love it... I saw this "rocket" and, having good experiences with GSI, bought it on a whim before a trip, hoping to drip into one of my other cooking cups instead of carrying a whole other mug JUST for coffee... It has been on two backpacking trips, and another round of testing at home just to be sure... and... This thing is a fail. The drip is PAINFULLY slow... and more than half the time, clogs before filtering a whole cup. God help you if, like me, you want several cups on a lazy morning. By the time you're done digging around and stirring the grounds to keep it flowing (I use that word loosely), the water is cold, and your half cup of coffee is too.

Great filter with one modification

I can vouch for the modification recommended by another REI reviewer here. I was about to toss the coffee rocket into the trash because of the molasses slow filtering until I took the advice and slightly enlarged the four holes at the bottom of the water receptacle. The water flow into the filter is much faster and efficient now...about 2 minutes for an 8oz/250ml cup. I didn’t use a coarse grind, just my favorite store bought vacuum pack grind. A slight sediment settled in the bottom of the cup as I expected, but an otherwise great cup of coffee for motocamping. Glad I didn’t toss this! (Btw, it also nests inside the GSI Outdoors Infinity Backpacker mug.)

Almost great!

Works well. 2 small items that keep it from being great. First the slow pour through, but I feel like if I drilled holes like some suggest it would be weak and I like the strength now. Second is design is different than REI's photos. It's not a woven filter like they show. It's a two piece design base with a stainless steel cup with tiny holes that fits into the "rocket" tripod base. Big issue is there's a big center hole in the metal filter that the plastic base fits into but doesn't fit closely enough to keep fine coffee grounds you have in regular drip coffee from getting through. You can kind of see this gap in the pic of new filter design. And other pic shows typical coffee grounds in last few sips. A good coffee make to use at work desk in office I have hot water access! Would buy another especially if they fix that gap!

Very finicky

This product is great in theory but in my opinion, it falls a bit short. I've used it 3 times so far. The first time the coffee came out weak and the water overflowed outside of the filter. I think this was by not using a coarse grind. The next two times the coffee turned out great, but as I was lifting it off of the cup, the filter assembly came apart and a lot of coffee grounds fell into my cup. I guess you must grab it by the base to prevent this. It has a very very tight fit until you put hot water into it, then the pieces will not stay together. I will be exchanging it when my trip is over.

Great way to end up with no coffee

If you’re like me and buy this and immediately take this backpacking, you’re likely to wake up and just stare at the thing all morning hoping a single drop will make it through the filter. As others have pointed out, the four initial holes are way too small. They’ll immediately get clogged with grounds and will stop any coffee from coming out. I tested at home with a French press grind and still had no coffee coming through. Others have somehow given this a 5 star after stabbing the thing, with only the latter being a sentiment I can sympathize with. I’ll definitely be going with another product for future trips.

Excellent cup of coffee.

I have tried three other types of small pour over devices, one being GSI's light weight java filter which securely clips to your mug. The coffee rocket though not as secure as the Java, does Brew up a better cup of coffee as it allows the grinds to be suspended water longer therefore the bolder stronger cup of coffee. It can waste a bit of water for clean up but its ability to nest in your mug for transport and quality of brew would highly recommend it.

Wanted to love it...but it just doesn't work

I loved the idea of this, and tried for a season to make a decent cup of coffee with this and it just does not make a particularly good cup of coffee. The drip is so slow that the coffee is tepid when it finishes, and I tried a variety of ground coffee sizes with no real improvement. I kinda gave up and just went back to using an aeropress or bringing instant coffee. The latter isn't much better, truly, but is certainly less bulky.

Works great, reasonable price, packs easy.

No, this does not produce some high-end award winning cup of coffee but it absolutely makes a nice cup of joe out in the woods with minimal effort, easy cleanup, and no spare filters needed. I'd recommend using a slightly coarser grind in these for a slightly quicker drip and I'd also recommend you give the coffee a quick "bloom" period before pouring the rest of your water in. Using a slightly coarser grind mine drips a whole 8oz cup in about a minute. Finally, you CAN get more than 8 ounces out of this just FYI. If you put as much coffee in as will fit you can definitely get another cup of coffee out of the grounds simply by pouring another 8 ounces of water through it. I fully recommend this if you want a no-fuss, easy to use, functioning coffee maker for camping without investing $40+ on something else.

Not for coffee drinkers

Possibly not made by actual coffee drinkers. Don't get me wrong....I love GSI products and have had a favorable impression of a LOT of their gear but this one falls way short. The steel filter basket is WAY too small and allows too much flow generating only the weakest possible 8oz cup of tea colored water...and don't even think about brewing anything bigger. Brewing a second cup of vaguely coffee flavored water requires disassembly and a rather fussy rinse & clean. Meanwhile the seat the keeps the grounds in the strainer during brewing is touchy and prone to unseating leaving you with a cup of liquid grounds. Too small to make a good cup. Too hard to clean. Too prone to dumping grounds in your cup. It's a hard no for me.
