Bought it for the durability and warranty
I got this case as a warranty replacement. I had used it from Albuquerque to home(3 legs commercially) and 7 more commercial flight legs within US. It broke the one lower foot in two pieces. So I have a new one now. I had a couple of items inside the case also broken by being crushed. This seems to be a structural suitcase but it really isn't. It offers no more protection to contents than a duffle bag with a solid bottom. The sides have no structure. It was very expensive and I guess I figured it would be tougher. Kind of disappointed. Will be very careful how I pack it up. It's well made, quality wise. I like it for it's size and maneuverability. But feel it's cost out ways its value.
Durability does not match the claims
I agree with the previous review that this luggage does not hold up well. We bought the same piece in late September 2017, it's been on several trips long-haul and short-haul flights since. While it does indeed hold a lot, it is not durable -- there's a rip in the outside cover and the inside is starting to fall apart. We have much older (and cheaper) luggage that's taken some pretty hard knocks over the years but is in much better shape. We have a smaller version of this, a few years older, also starting to rip apart on the inside. Sorry Eagle Creek, these bags are just not fit for purpose.
Durability in question
Recently purchased the luggage due to so many features like handles in multiple places, reinforced corners, sturdy fabric and expandable zipper. I used it on one trip where I checked it. The capacity of this piece is fantastic but the durability sure isn't. A seam on the top side close to the zipper came apart. Am going to utilize the warranty and give it another try but the bummer is the warranty requires you to ship it at your expense. I really want to like this luggage because of the thoughtful design but I'd caution people about its durability. I know airlines can be hard on luggage but at this price and with Eagle Creek's durability claims I figured it would hold up much better than the $50 luggage from Kohl's that's been on 15 checked trips and 9 years of road trips.
So far so good
I haven't had the TARMAC 25 long - one road trip and one air trip - but is exceeding my expectation. This is definitely check baggage size. Even so, it doesn't feel too large yet swallows more than enough to support a full week's business trip (couple of suits plus casual/workout wear). No damage from the air trip so it seams pretty durable. Rolls great and handles a variety of terrains. Pretty light weight for its size. Seems to be very high value - well worth what I spent, yet quite a bit less expensive than other highly rated luggage. Eagle Creek will be my first stop for additional luggage!
Mixed results - not up to Eagle Creek's usual standards
Purchased two of these suitcases to replace two Eagle Creek 29" suitcases, that are still in good shape after multiple four to six week international trips (trying to do with less). The zipper on one of the bags is hard to work around one corner; one suitcase works fine, the other one works fine around one corner, but not the other. We contacted Eagle Creek customer service, and received the following response from Ronnie: "There is not easy fix per se. Due to the zippers being puncture resistant, they are going to be a little stiff, especially around corners. This will ease up after some usage, but not by much." We were hoping that Eagle Creek would come up with a solution for this problem.
Durability
I really like the size, design, pockets, wheels seem very durable. However, the zipper is another thing altogether. The bottom center has separated from the base so I won’t be able to use this again except for local/road trips (at least until it peels apart further). Bought for trip in 2017 and it hasn’t been on but maybe 5 trips as a checked bag and rarely filled to capacity.
Broken Zipper
The zipper separated from the bag. Not cool. Using the warranty has been a hassle. I have other Eagle Creek bags. This one is not of the same quality.
Expands to 59" total,17.5 x 26 x 15.5 in
This has been an excellent balance of weight, size, and utility; it's relatively light weight, ample size, and expandability allows my partner to pack a significant amount to a destination, expand, and pack a bit more home!
The best suitcase for 23 kilo limits
First criterion - how the suitcase is arranged inside. The zipper has a top section with enough depth for shirts and undergarments. So when you pack and open up the suitcase, you already have a logical division of where your clothes are. Second criterion - how light the suitcase is. Mine, the Tarmac 25", is idea for the 23 kilos that one is allowed and only takes 4 kilos of that for the weight of the suitcase itself. Third criterion - durability and ruggedness. My compliments to Eagle Creek for a product that stands up to lots of baggage-handler punishment. The oversize wheels make it very easy to pull along and the bottom strap also makes it easy to lift (one hand on the to strap and one on the bottom) when the case is fully loaded.
Disappointing
I have an Eagle Creek bag that is about 7 years old and is in perfect shape. I bought this bag as an updated one for extensive travel this fall expecting the same good quality. Not the case. The inner lining ripped right away. The straps that hold the contents in are vertical rather than horizontal, which put additional pressure on the zipper. The sides are floppy as well. I don’t recommend this bag.
