by fromBackcountry Bliss! Took these skis to Yellowstone for some backcountry touring. They did great in the fluff, crud and slick. On trail and packed down sections they are a bit sloppy and tend to want to kick out sideways. A great ski for getting off the beaten path for sure!

by fromA great ski for the backcountry I picked my Madshus Epochs yesterday and had them mounted with Voile Hardwire bindings at my local REI. I went for a short jaunt today on a local, unmaintained cross-country trail. Snow Conditions ranged from incredibly icy to deep powder. The epochs glided very well down the trail and made good climbs over moderate slopes. They handled some incredibly icy decents with aplomb. Skins will be necessary for "earning turns", but that is to be expected. These skis are confidence building backcountry skis that are comfortable gliding down a road, and also have the necessary chops to cut nice telemark or even alpine-style turns when necessary. I've skied telemark skis for years (since the late 80s). These are very capable skis that you can use for a good day of lift based skiing if you wanted to. You won't be doing extreme skiing and you won't be as fast as the guys on "super-fat, alpine style" skis with four buckle telemark boots, but they won't be out touring or earning turns with their heavy set-ups. I bought these as a "do it all" ski and paired them with a set of Alico telemark/backcountry boots. I've been very happy with this set-up. I think the Epochs are a lot of ski for the money.
