Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect Jacket for layering I purchased an older model of this jacket in early 2012 for use on a 5 day trek in Patagonia. It works PERFECT in a typical layering system as an insulation layer. A base layer, a long sleeve shirt, this jacket, and a waterproof shell can be adapted for most environments. I wore all of the above to go sledding in Colorado in February in the middle of the night and was toasty warm. I wore only this jacket and the water-proof shell for two weeks backpacking in Europe in October. The jacket is very light and easy to compress, so I ended up using it as my daily jacket in Los Angeles. It's too hot for jackets during the day, but bike rides home in the winter are chilly. Also with warm weather hiking, I still bring it for emergencies because it is so light. On it's own, the jacket is not equivenlent to a winter jacket. It's a medium warmth. It's usually too hot for any strenuous activity. It does a great job cutting out the wind and seems to be water-resistant, though I have never really tested it in the rain.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this jacket! After about 3 weeks I'm very pleased with this jacket--it's very lightweight and comfortable, about as warm as a medium weight sweater but more windproof, is going to work well for layering, nice color (turquoise jungle) and stitching, and compresses into it's own pocket for travel. My complaints apply to many items, not just this one: it is sized for a tall skinny person and I'm short and average (not overweight). Thus, the sleeves are too long, so when I put my arms in, the lining slides out over my hands. I've solved this by carefully stitching through all layers from the inside of the sleeves, from the cuff upward for a few inches, following the exterior stitching--it works! Also, it's a bit too snug at the hips but I'll have to live with that. The value was good compared to others I saw, so I'm happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it; lightweight, warm I love the lightweight feel and the stitching design--not boring :). I hate bulky, heavy jackets that restrict movement. Most comparable jackets are ridiculously expensive, so this is a great buy for what you get. It's great with a thin layer underneath for below 30 and by itself between 30-40 degrees. You could also wear it under another coat because it's so thin. I haven't tried it in wind and rain yet, only had it about a month. Seems durable though :). The only thing I would prefer is a more durable inside pocket lining; I always put my hands and keys in pockets and I wear them out, so I imagine I will in this jacket eventually. That's a design feature we need badly (hint hint REI ;)).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable & Warm I wear this jacket everyday because it is very lightweight and warm. I often leave it on even at work -unzipped. I walk late at night when it's pretty cold so I just throw on a scarf and hat and good to go. I bought the black and am definitely condidering another color. BTW, I have short arms and this jacket fits very well so if you have a long torso/arms, you may want to try it on first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely a great buy This is probably the best lightweight jacket I've ever had. I don't like wearing bulky jackets, so I layer this under the North Face Apex Bionic jacket, and between the two of them I stay warm outside (it can at or below freezing here in the winter) and don't burn up when I walk inside. The wind is almost entirely blocked out as well. I tested that standing on the bow of a ferry in WA in the winter; other than my face, I was perfectly comfortable in the biting wind. I am short (5'4") and busty, so trying to find jackets that are my size (L/XL) that don't also have monkey sleeves or a ridiculously long torso like a lot of other outdoor brands is almost impossible (because of course the only women who wear size L outdoor wear must be Amazon women). The length of sleeves and the torso fit are perfect. REI's clothing might be looser/less fitted on someone small and slender, but it fits perfectly for a shorter and curvier body like mine. It's also handy that it packs down small for traveling so I can leave the bulky coat at home. And it's made from recycled materials! Definitely a great buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lightweight Warmth! This is a great addition to one's layering system. I was looking for a lightweight synthetic instead of down for the wintertime in the PNW. I've used this on a few outings where temps dropped below 32 degrees. When combined with a fleece it kept me warm. The jacket also fits into an internal pocket which can be easily attached to the pack when not needed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm as a latte, light as the foam Maybe the best combination of warmth, light weight, and lack of bulk in REI's line. Not close to waterproof - will shed middling fog but not much more - but then you'd buy something else for rainwear anyway (would, however, go nicely under a waterproof outer layer). First-rate windbreaker, though, when the greyhounds want to walk early in the morning, and the orange color is good for safety and visibility.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight with midrange warmth Great styling and stitching in a lightweight but mid-range warm jacket. I got this in black with the bold purple trim for a layer under the REI Belltown Rain Jacket. I'm 5'4" 130 lbs and the medium fit great but a little snug on my busty frame, so I went with the large and it is perfect. The jacket is great as an under layer on a cold rainy day, or very stylish for city hikes on a 30-40 degree day.
