    REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men'sis rated4.2143out of5by42.
Rated1out of5byfromUpdates lacking, not as good as in the pastI have had 2 previous versions of the Lookout 40 pack, the most recent being the pack purchased in 2011 for a walking vacation in England. I needed a pack that would work on the trail and as a good all-around travel pack and the Lookout had two features that sold me: the easy to use and access organization pouches in the front compartment and the built-in rain cover. In prep for another England walking trip, I went in to see the latest Lookout pack and came away perplexed and extremely disappointed. I spent several minutes going through each pocket and compartment in a fruitless search for the organization pouches and there was no rain cover. My guess is these were sacrificed so that other 'clever' updates could be incorporated and a price point maintained. What these omissions tell me is that little consultation was made of actual users. The video says the Lookout is a great travel pack, but who would eliminate the ability to organize and securely stow items such as wallets, cameras, pens and other essentials that hikers and travelers require easy access to and then market it as a "globe-trotting travel" pack? I am brand loyal and would prefer my next pack to be REI as my experience with prior Lookout versions has been great, but will not purchase this version and look elsewhere if the next update of the Lookout continues to sacrifice truly useful trail and travel features.

Rated5out of5byfromGreat day packVery good day pack. Quality construction and lots of room. You can pay more, but why? Do yourself a favor and buy this. Not quite large enough for an overnight trek for me, but great for all day hikes.

Rated4out of5byfromSpacious and functional, minor issues.I bought this bag as a mid size hiker and over night pack. It is also useful for daily activities, and works perfect for weekend getaways when I just don't want to pack a suitcase. Very comfortable, easily adjustable, and durable, which is all you can ask for. The My only complaint is in the main compartment. There is a pocket against the back wall with a zipper I can barely get my hand inside, and it runs the length of the pack. The opening is way too small to get a bladder with water inside. Unless I have a document or map that's over a foot long, I have no way to even utilize this pocket. REI seems to have conveniently overlooked this pocket completely. (I would too if I had no explanation for the flaw) I'm thinking of cutting the pocket partially down the middle and sewing velcro or another zipper on it just so I can use it. I am also hoping to modify the pack somehow to allow me to hang a small axe, or ice axe on the outside. Currently it will hold collapsible ski/hiking poles, but not very effective with anything heavier. Overall this is a nice pack and I am grateful. I have put it to good use already, and have plans for it this summer.

Rated5out of5byfromjust rite for the pricethis is the 1st real back pack I have purchased. the last several years i just used a cheap one. just used this one for day hikes in the smoky mountains last week. wow, what a difference when you use a quality pack. I shopped for weeks online and local stores before making my decision on the REI Lookout 40. I am very happy with it. Well built and enough room for everything I needed for our hikes. adjusts easily and very comfortable for all day hikes. pack was loaded to capacity since I was carrying most everything for 2 adults and 2 teen girls. I think it would be very hard to find a better pack for anything in its price range, and even some I looked at for much more. It has enough pockets for everything I needed, easily adjusts for comfort and it looks good to.

Rated4out of5byfromExcellent Weekend/DaypackI bought this pack (Men's Large - 42L) after a long period of shopping for a replacement for my 65L pack. After years of buying high quality replacements for tent, stove, sleeping bag, pad, etc. I have been able to downsize quite a bit. This pack is marketed as a day pack but I can fit everything needed for a regular 3-season weekend trip and still be quite comfortable. One of my zippers is a little difficult to operate but overall the quality seems pretty good. I love the pocket layout - there are enough to keep things organized but not too many as to cause me to forget where I put things. I wish they were a little more separated as filling any one pocket will push into the other neighboring ones, but overall this isn't really a problem. I like the materials - the mesh is strong and stretchy, the bottom panel (with sleeping bag access zipper, if you're into that) is waterproof, and all of the other materials appear to be of good quality. My only real criticism deals with the external hydration bladder pocket. While this is an interesting design feature, I don't really need quick access to 3L of water. There is no way to close off the top of the pocket so if you stuff a full bladder into the pocket, the opening remains open and can collect rain, dust, etc. Most hydration bladder pockets have a 'sleeve' that the bladder slides into and the hard mouth of the bladder rests on the edge of the sleeve, but this pack lacks that standard feature. Aside from that, I'm very happy with this fairly light weight pack and will be using it for all my weekend backpacking trips.

Rated5out of5byfromGood All-Around DaypackHave had this pack for about a month and used it on some short hikes and ski trips. It's a sizable pack and maybe a little heavier than what I might've used in the past as a daypack, but with two kids in tow the size is just right. Sheds water and mud nicely. Seems resistant so far to snags, tears, and slight bending of frame to jam into a ski locker. Highly recommended.

Rated3out of5byfromNot a Fan, This Model at leastFirst, let me say that this is a comparison review from my older, highly used and loved, Lookout 40 from 3-4 years old. Loved that pack and finally broke down and wanted to buy this one, but my work beat me to it as a gift. Why did we mess with the pockets?? The 2 side mesh pockets are now angled instead of vertical. I always put my water bottle in these, can't do that any more. Not to mention the other items I cannot put there now. Vertical zippers? Are you nuts? Any time you open the zippers on the 2 smaller pockets, you run the risk of everything falling out. I have forgotten to close zippers on my old pack, but everything stays put because the zippers are horizontal. Also should mention, one of the great features of the older pack's small pockets was an internal mesh, zippered organizers inside the pockets. This has nothing so all those items you begin keeping in your pack.....they are all over the place. Good things: Love the ventilated back, much better than the old version. Belt pouches are a big plus, larger and hold cameras or phones. Whistle on chest strap is a nice feature used often now, but not back then. Hydration pouch is now on the outside. I thought this would make it easier to fill than the inside pocket of my old Lookout, but it is actually harder....but for some reason I like this outside pocket. Like the zipper for bottom access to the pack...big plus. Overall, not a bad pack for hiking, weekend trips, commuting to work, biking, and many other activities. Just not a big improvement of product for me. Kinda disappointed, usually love all rei stuff.

Rated4out of5byfromDecent packI like this packs features minus the pocket arrangement. I wish one of the pockets had a small mesh organizer and key loop etc. Also the upper small pocket is basically exposed inside the main compartment which is unusual. I think the sleeping compartment would be better if it were seperate from the main compartment as well, but thats just my tatste in features
