REI Heavyweight Tights - Women'sis rated4.5out of5by2.
Rated5out of5bySpiritSailfrom5 degrees todayI ordered a pair last week; the weather ranged from -15 on up to 12 all week. They finally arrived Fri, so I layered them with an REI midweight and knit pants for a hike with the dogs. It was dangerously cold but they kept me toasty for the hour that I was out. I'll be buying a 2nd pair.

Rated4out of5bybasecampboundfromPretty good - especially for the priceI visited my local REI specifically looking a mid weight base layer, for an upcoming backpacking trip in Yosemite. I've spent a freezing night with lighter weight base layers, and wanted to make sure I was plenty warm. I admit, I was a bit skeptical when the REI associate recommended these, as they seemed a bit thin. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they were plenty warm.
I had previously purchased a prior style of REI mid weight base layers, and they were considerably thicker than these, and kept me toasty warm. These are superior when it comes to wicking ability, (thankfully), but the previous style was a tad warmer, and softer against the skin. That aside, these were more than adequate, and were comfortable to wear under another layer, which the previous style was not.
The real plus on this style is the high waist. It was really nice to be able to tuck a top into these, and not have them come out in the middle of the night, (freezing my back). The top stayed tucked in all night, and was surprisingly comfortable. This is a solid mid weight base layer, and much less expensive than some other brands, making them a real winner in my book.
The one thing I would caution, is that these are great as mid weight base layers. I would strongly disagree that they are functional as heavy weight. As long as you don't expect heavy weight performance, they are just fine, and very comfy.
