Rated 4 out of 5 by from Little effort I purchased this filter system after an 8-day trip through the Smoky Mountains. One of the guys brought this filter. It made filling our water bottles each day a breeze. Just fill up the dirty bag and hang. It's that easy. No pumping necessary. Backflushing is a breeze. All you have to do is rais the dirty bag/bottle higher than the clean bag to reverse the flow of water through the filter. No reversing valves or disassembling necessary. I had to purchase my own. I took it on an overnighter and was just as pleased with it. A great buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Preliminary report: Looks great This is just a preliminary review as winter won't go away and I haven't been able to use it in the back-country yet. But this is a great product. The filter is exactly the same as in the larger 4L version, so I won't focus on that. The clean reservoir is nicely designed. The handle has a clip that allows you to easily attach it around branches, etc. which is a nice touch. Also, you can arrange the handle so you are holding the strap twice, which shortens the handle when you're just carrying it, or you can hold it so the strap is longer when you're working on filling the reservoir. The adapter works surprisingly well. I mainly use platybottles as well as a water bladder, and the adapter works great for both. This also means I can leave the larger portion of the adapter at home, which is a nice bonus as less weight is always better. For the bladder, you simply have to take off the bitevalve, and you can filter directly into the bladder. A standard nalgene also works fine and when I tried with my smaller 16oz nalgene, that worked great as well. For all of those bottles, it fits tightly and snugly so you didn't have to hold the hose. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is I haven't been able to try it with dirty water. Quick note: the bottle adapter does have 'air relief' holes so you can use it with solid bottles. This does mean that it leaks ever so slightly when you backflush the filter. It's very easy to avoid. Nothing's wrong, it's simply a feature they had to include so solid bottles could be used with the filter. For a bit more info on the adapter, you can click on the video. Sorry it's so quiet - it's my first video and I didn't quite know how to fix that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best water filter I've used I just got back from my first back country use with the filter and honestly am really thrilled by it. First, disclaimers: I've only used it once, and cannot attest to it's durability. Also, the water I filtered was mostly clear. It's really easy to use, really fast, and well designed. I mainly used it to filter into a 1L platyplus bottle and my BigZip bladder. Both of these just require the inner portion of the bottle adapter, so I left the outer portion at home. Something I really wasn't expecting was how it filled my bladder, even while the bladder was in a fully packed pack. To fill the bladder, I simply pulled off the bite valve and hooked up the filter (I suggest you only do this with bladders that have an on-off switch at the bite valve, otherwise it would likely be tricky to hook up) It obviously took longer, but even with a pack bulging at the seams (had to take a much larger sleeping bag than normal) it worked. I will say that if you're planning on hiking with more than 2 people, you should probably get the larger version and possibly buy the bottle kit separate as 2L isn't a huge amount of water, but it filters so fast that filling up the dirty reservoir again isn't a big issue at all. I wanted to add this to my previous review but could not figure out how to edit that one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value purchase I truly believe that out of all the gravity filter options Platypus offers, this is likely the best value of all three. It's the same filter cartridge and same flow rate, but with a smaller "dirty" reservoir and a standard MSR/Nalgene style thread-on bottle mouth at the end. With a few quick mods, it's really convenient. This is what I've done: 1. I've removed those foam ends on the filter. I fail to see what good they are, but they're not heavy, just extra bulk. 2. I've cut the 'clean' line and spliced in a Camelbak style quick-connector to make it plug into my hydration system without having to remove it from my pack 3. I've replaced the 'dirty' bag with a discarded Camelbak reservoir. It still quick-connects on, but offers a filling capacity of 2.5 liters instead of 1.5, making it just a little more useful. 4. I swapped out that stuff sack for a different, less complex one. It's a great system, and the best of the three Platypus filters in terms of overall value. With a little tinkering, it's actually a truly useful system.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't perfom as advertised Oh, where to start. My wife and I used this on a 22 day trip on the PCT, filtering about 10 liters/day. We were looking for something lighter than the pumps, which this is, but it doesn't work as advertised and it's not very convenient to fill. I HIGHLY recommend pre-filtering before you put water in the "dirty" bag. We pre-filtered with a bandana. Without prefiltering, it probably would have been useless! ...and most water sources were very clean. This is advertised as filering 1.5 liters per minute. Maybe it was that good the first day, but here is what I was able to get out of it. Day 6 - 2 min/liter; Day 9 - 2min, 20sec /liter; Day 12 - 3 min/liter; Day 17 - 2 min40sec/liter; Day 20 - 3 min/liter. We backflushed about every 4 liters (recommended every 2-4 liters. After we got home, I backflushed about a liter through it and was able to filter a liter in 2 minutes. A far cry from the advertised rate after ~200 of the 1500 liter advertised life of the filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome, Fast, Lightweight Filter this is a fantastic water filter, super lightweight and easy to carry, especially since it all comes in it's own pouch. wide opening on top made it super easy to just dunk this thing in the lake and scoop out water. hung it from a tree and the water filtered really fast. this was more than fast enough to keep our hydration packs refilled and get water quickly once we got to camp for dinner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fast and Easy! I picked this up because we were going camping in a group and only had 1 filter for all of us (small, ceramic, hand-pump type) and knew that we needed something else. After talking with the employees, i was pointed to this gravity-fed system... HUGE improvement over what we had. We used it to fill a 5 gallon jug at the campsite and all 9 of us had all the water we needed. It was a really simple process and it filters really quickly, so even filling the 5 gallons wasn't too bad.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Need clean water in a hurry This water treatment system is very light weight, compact, fast and easy to use. The universal adaptor for various bottles is great. The instructions say don't disconnect the tubes from the filter after use which makes getting it back in its bag slightly difficult without kinking said tubing which might shorten tubing life.
