Limited functionality, MAC users beware"Less than meets the eye" would be a good alternative headline for this product. The Map Kit holds great promise: the ability to access satellite, topo, and Trails Illustrated maps from a single source. However the execution is disappointing. Functionality compared to the old TOPO! product is vey limited. The route planning, compass, distance, find, waypoint, etc. functions are either very primitive or missing altogether.
Further, when attempting to print from my MAC and HP printer it literally only prints half of the screen image. The part that does print is of disappointing resolution (using the rather expensive National Geo map paper might help this). PC users may not encounter this issue. I recently discovered that National Geo no longer supports Mac users on TOPO! and suspect this is the same issue.
To me, this is a beta product not ready for prime time. Hopefully National Geo (and Alltrails) will address these issues and make the fixes available to us reluctant beta users!

Great ProductIt seems that some of the other reviews have focused on the features of older National Geographic products that are not included within the Ultimate Outdoor Map Kit. I don't have experience with those products, so I can't speak to how great they were (or how expensive they were), but I couldn't be happier with this product.
For a perfectly reasonable price, the Ultimate Outdoor Map Kit provides access to some killer National Geographic maps and provides easy online access for adventure exploration and planning. The maps can then be transferred to your mobile device for easy access outdoors. It provides me everything I was looking for �?? I'm happy with the product.

awkward, won't work with GPSI hoped this would replace the now discontinued Nat Geog TOPO! series. It doesn't. The software is awkward at best, mostly incomprehensible. The Route screen is 1/3 blocked by the side bar. Can't add waypoints and transfer to my GPS. No tutorial. Help menu is not helpful. The package exterior doesn't tell you that you have to pay an annual fee to keep it working. Have to start with a city location and then scroll tediously to the backcountry area of interest. Printed map legend did not all print. Scaling is confusing.

awesome online/offline toolsThe website and iPhone app have become my FIRST STOP for hikes I want to learn about and plan to do.
I don't use the printing capabilities as often as the online tools but when I do need it, it gets the job done.
The tools are easy to use and there are more than enough hiking options with helpful ratings/reviews to meet my needs. The GPS tracking in the iPhone app is a huge bonus!

Great kit for online mapping!Make sure that you spend enough time using the kit before going on the trails - it's great for mapping and planning ahead of time and will save you a ton of time and prevent you from getting lost!

Terrible. Just buy printed section maps.Was excited to be able to print my own maps and figured it would pay for itself vs buying individual maps.
I was wrong. Large sections of the maps are missing/greyed out, and you can't seach for specific trails in the app. You can only search by national park, then you have to physically drag around the map and find what you are looking for. The only other option is to sign onto the website and search the trails from there.
But again, large sections of popular parks and trails are unavailable, like 1/3 (east side) of the Olympic National park/forest, 1/4 of the Mt. Baker, Wenatchee/Okanogan, etc etc.
Do not buy this.

Non-FunctionalWe bought this at the Lynnwood store with a bit of trepidation because we weren't sure if other online sites offered the same mapping capabilities for less money. Some REI employees told us it was a good program and so we purchased it. My husband tried to load the DVD onto his desktop but had lots of installation issues. Ultimately we got it to work, but then could not print any of the maps he wanted. After a couple weeks of sheer frustration and not getting any help from National Geographic, we took it back for a return.

That is a ton of maps...I will take thatI've been using TOPO from National Geographic for years and I've been waiting for the next cool map thing. This is pretty good. I agree with the other comments that it doesn't have all the tools found in TOPO and I would like more but what it does have is total USA coverage for topo maps and Trails Illustrated maps. I've spent hundreds of $$ on maps and now I get them on demand for printing and on my iphone. I'll take that deal.
I've only done a few hikes since getting the product but this is what I like - using the printed map with mobile app makes it easy to find where you are and see where you are going, iphone app lets you take photos that link to map, I can track a hike and the track is saved to my account, jumping from topo maps to National Geographic maps to Satellite image is cool. The picture is my track on a hike. The blue dots are photos. This also shows the profile feature.
I would like to see more tools and features to compliment and use with the maps but overall I like this.
