Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the job! I purchased these as my commuter shoes. I live in Brussels and have a bike-train commute that has about 10km of cycling. I am also on a bicycle seven days a week for commuting, cycle/triathlon training, and coffee shop rides. I needed something to get me through my apartment lobby and around the train stations without slipping, sliding, and "clickety-clicking" around. There is always a steady drizzle in Belgium so I needed a shoe with traction and enough stiffness in the sole for a good power transfer. I researched many shoes looking at cost, durability, comfort, and sole stiffness. The X-Alp Seek V provided all those things. I agree they may run a tiny bit small. I am a solid size 11 and ordered these in 46, which would make it about a 11.5 and have plenty of room to where I am able to wear a waterproof sock over my regular socks without any discomfort. The only minor drawback I see is a normal shoe cover for cold/rain cannot be worn over them. Overall, I have been wearing them four months now in pouring rain, high wind, below freezing temps, and even a little snow and I love them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfortable on & off bike I had tried a pair of Keen cycling shoes some time ago, because my Keen sandals are the most comfortable shoes I own, but had to return them because they just didn't have the same feel. I'm very happy with the Pearl shoes. At the store I had to keep asking for the next larger size, but eventually found the right one. I use them with hybrid pedals for commuting 8-10 miles each way to the office. I like the pocket in the tongue to tuck in the laces so they won't get caught in the chain. Two sets of cleat mounting points allowed me to try both and pick the best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shoes for touring/commuting/hiking I bought these shoes for my 2700 mile cycling tour of Iceland, northern Europe, and the East Coast of the US (Boston-DC) in the summer of 2013. They were my only pair of shoes and worked great! I wanted a pair that I could walk in quite a lot, and compatible with Crank Bros cleats so that the cleat would not scrape the ground. I never had any problems, they fit great, were great for cycling, and comfortable enough for some decent walks/hikes up mountains in northwest Iceland . Once back in Houston, I used them while cycling to work at a bike shop, and around town. Always felt great, and looked good too. I am currently on holiday in Borneo, and wore them a few days ago when climbing up Mt. Kinabalu at 4,095m. Even there they were great, although probably not designed for real hiking. I just didn't have any other good shoes. Overall, fantastic shoes, great for touring and every day cycling, and I will definitely get another pair eventually when my current pair wears out.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible for long distance touring! I am a veteran of long distance bike touring worldwide. I needed a replacement long distance touring shoe. In the store they fit well, and were comfortable for walking. I really liked them until after I started on a modest 2200 mile loaded tour on my bicycle. The soles turned out to be far too flexible (sideways) for pedaling long distances. Each day, after only about 20 miles my outer three toes would go numb due to the sole flexing and drooping around the pedals (Shimano XTR) which are narrower than the shoe sole. I could feel the pedal cutting into the outer edge of my foot through the flimsy sole. This caused foot pain, numbness, and cramping. THESE SHOES ARE MISERABLE FOR TOURING! Normally Pearl Izumi makes great stuff, but NOT HERE. I went back to my old and ragged Answer MTB shoes which have a sole stiff enough to take the miles, yet allow walking. Lesson learned: never leave home with new equipment you haven't really tested. I also disliked the way these shoes secure the laces in a flimsy hard to use elastic pocket at the top of the tongue. The velcro instep strap on my old shoe is much easier to use to trap the laces.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok Shoe This is my first pair of bike shoes. I ride about 3000 miles per year on my hybrid and up until now have worn tennis shoes. I wanted something with a stiffer sole. This shoe has the option to install clips but I'm not ready for those yet. By leaving the plate installed they pretty much act like a stiff soled shoe. My only complaint is that after pedaling 45 minutes or so, my toes start to get numb. I haven't been able to figure out what causes this. The seat height and the pedals are the same as when I wore tennis shoes. I've tried tightening the laces, loosening the laces, wearing thicker socks but nothing seems to change. I guess I'll have to start experimenting with inserts or try changing my seat height. I like the firm feeling and good grip that these shoes have but I have to figure out what is cutting off the blood flow to my toes when I wear them. Maybe you won't have this same problem but its something to be aware of.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value for money fro MTB Sizing of this shoe is weird. I usually wear size 44 (European) wide. For makes that are narrow (e.g. The-North-Face) I would usually take a size larger (EU 45). With this shoe I ended up at EU 46 (thanks for the patient agent at REI that brought all sizes until I found the right one for me). It's flexible top lining makes it comfortable and good for cycling as well as occasional walking (that's the fate of us, MTB cyclists). The elastic pocket at the top, where you can stuff the laces so they don't get tangled in the chain is great. The only negative comment I have is that the shoe is not waterproof. That makes it perfect for the dry Israeli summer, but less suitable for our rainy and muddy winters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and Comfortable Purchased this shoe to replace my worn out Shimano SPD shoe. This is the first MTB shoe that fit my skinny feet and feel great. I like how the front is rounded a bit so when walking the shoe doesnt feel stiff and my heels dont feel like they might come out.
