Comments about REI XT 85 Pack:
This bag is like a black hole...with orange accents. I upgraded from my 65 liter bag so I have extra space for warm clothes and other essentials in the winter or for longer trips in the summer. This bag is the perfect balance between size, price and style. Comfortable straps made the heavier weight I could carry easily bearable and they can be easily adjusted for a better fit. I like that everything I take with me can fit inside the bag and doesn't have to be attached to the outside so it eliminates any potential swing weight or balance issues. I've even used it for shorter, more minimalist, trips because the side straps can be tightened to carry smaller/lighter loads. My only complaint is that it could use some side pockets instead of the zippers that offer access to the main compartment. I'm sure some people will find the side zippers very useful to get access to items that can be buried in this massive bag but I'm not a fan of them because I pack my bag efficiently so that anything I could need in-between setting up camp is always at the top, or bottom so it can be accessed through the sleeping bag compartment. It's a personal preference that I would just rather have more pockets for organization than zippers. The positive side is that all the zippers are seam sealed (or covered) and the bag is very effective against light rain. It's tough to find a good rain cover for the bag though because of its size.

Comments about REI XT 85 Pack:
Have put about 160 miles on this pack and it is generally pretty comfortable hauling a 45 lb load. Lots of pockets and places to hang things. The belt buckle broke in the first 30 miles but I managed to get a replacement from REI with no problem quickly which while a different color seems a bit more flexible which should improve its life. The suspension is a bit tricky and the upper pulls at the shoulder can be hard to reach. It is easy to get things out of balance and not so easy with the pack on to get them back into balance. But it has the flexibility to fit any body style and it is easy to load easy to access gear from top, bottom or sides and it is solidly built. Of course that is a plus and a minus as it isn't the lightest pack out there. I have only had two packs with a hydration bladder location built in but this one is a bit difficult to remove and re-install the bladder without emptying the pack.

Comments about REI XT 85 Pack:
Great pack that is worth its weight for the amount of space it provides. and the two outside front pockets are great for easy access to small to medium items.

Comments about REI XT 85 Pack:
I bought this a few weeks ago and was planning on using it for an overnight trip to Springer Mountain in GA. Things turned for the worst after a few miles and we had to turn back after one in our party hurt his knee.
It was very humid with some slight rain. I used this without the cover for the most part. The insides of the pack stayed mostly dry though.
The padding is thin, but the material is great.
I like how the pack has many straps to adjust the load and tighten easily and effecively.
My only concern though, i pulled the lid open and stretched it a little harshly, and I heard the sound of fabric ripping. I can't find where but i did hear it.
Overall though, I am very pleased with this pack.
