Novara Transfer Bike - 2013is rated4.4286out of5by7.
Rated3out of5byfromSolid bike, with nuisancesThe Novara Transfer is a decent bike with some nice features. It's well-built and rides nicely. I gave it an average rating, because as bikes go, it's nothing special. I like the internal hub shifter, good brakes, comfortable seat, bell, rear rack, and pedal-powered headlamp. I like the fenders but did not like that the rear fender rattled and squeaked against the frame (metal against metal, duh!). I should note that the REI bike shop assembled the bike. To fix the rattling problem, I slid rubber tubing over the bike frame between the frame and fender, then jammed another piece of rubber between the fender and it's metal c-braket. Now that the rains have returned, I have also noticed that the pedals are not very grippy. They are fine for sneakers or lug-soles, but it is almost impossible to pedal in smooth-bottomed casual shoes if the shoes or pedals are wet.

Rated5out of5byfromawesome bike!I never had a bike that shifts so easily between gears! Whether moving or stationary. And comes with front light, rear light, bell, and bracket over rear wheel. I added a mirror to the handlebar, water bottle holder, and a panier that sits on the rear bracket. Perfect. LOVE riding it! Very smooth and comfortable. AND it was a great price at 1/2 off!

Rated5out of5byfromLove this bike!I love this bike! The only negative is carrying it up to our third floor apartment because with the rack and the extra bells and whistles (literally) it's a little heavy. It's a nice sturdy bike, and I have absolutely loved riding it! I would recommend it to anyone!

Rated4out of5byfromAssembly & quality control issuesBike was purchased in July 2013. I agree with everything the previous reviewer, jnathanj, said in their post. This bike came with all of my desired components (except maybe drum brakes and a dyno rear light). Internal gear hub, racks, dynamo-powered front light, battery operated rear light. However this bike suffered major quality-control issues. On my first ride with the bike (7 mi.)the rear wheel starting rubbing against the frame to the point where the wheel froze up and I could no longer ride. After the long walk home, I took the bike into REI. They fixed the rear wheel and replaced my tire at no cost, the same day. I took the bike out for a short ride to the grocery store and back with no issues, but when I got home I noticed the V-brakes were rubbing against the tires and the wheels were out-of-true. I adjusted the V-brakes to compensate for the wheels and took the bike on another ride. I only made it ~100 yards before my pedal fell off the crankset and stripped the threads. I brought the bike into REI and discussed my concerns about assembly/poor quality issues. The REI mechanic told me to leave the bike with him and he would fix my pedal and go over the bike thoroughly, free of charge. I've since done ~ 100 miles on the bike with no issues. It rides much better now! So hopefully the bike was just assembled haphazardly, and it just needed a good once-over. Overall, I really like this bike. Aside from my initial quality-control issues, this bike comes with everything a commuter needs at a great deal. REI's customer service is excellent!

Rated5out of5byfromNovara's well-sorted commuter bikeKudos to whoever specified this bike's build. It's fine, with components matched, a great commuter steed right out of the store. Nice touches: The AXA lighting; headlight has an inbuilt capacitor/condensor to keep it shining for a few minutes after the dyno-hub stops feeding it. The battery powered taillight has a movement sensor, so that the rider's wiggling, even at a stop, keeps it lit even after its default 'a few minutes on'. Both lights can be left in "AUTO" for self-turn-on at dusk. Head light has terminals which could easily be used for other power take-offs (phone charger/dyno-powered other-lights) More nice touches: Threaded headset and quill stem make for easy adjustments, and the microadjust seatpost lets you dial in the tilt and fore-aft of the saddle. The integrated seatpost-binder/forward rack mount is nice too, a 'clean detail'. Tires on mine were Schwalbe Marathon with reflective sidewalls. The mass-conscious could ditch/swap the Alu kickstand, the Alu chainguard, and/or the sturdy and nicely finished steel fenders, if they seek to trim weight below the as-built 38# for the largest model. All other major parts esp. handlebars are already alloy by my magnet tests. Final drive ratio is approximately: 1 crank turn = 8+1/2 ft. in low, 21+1/6 ft. in high (7th gear). Value? at its late summer 2013 pricing, it's nearly a screaming deal, I feel.

Rated5out of5byfromSmooth rideGot rid of my mountain bike ! Love this bike, raised the front bar , I sit upright it is very comfortable, very smooth ride on the street . The internal gear is amazing and the ride is very smooth. I was not sure about the bike being heavier but after a few hours at Rei, and test driving a few different bikes, I came back to this one, steel bikes = a smooth ride! Will probably upgrade for a better saddle soon.

Rated4out of5byfromGood BikeThis was a sort of gift, but I have heard great things from the receiving party about how much they enjoy this bicycle. It is ridden almost every day for around 1 to 2 hours at a time.
