Comments about SOL Escape Bivy:
A fellow backpacker mentioned that he got an extra 6-8 degrees on his sleeping bag when he used this Bivy as a cocoon over it. Being skeptical I thought I would just have to get one and see. Well, it absolutely does exactly that. I am a cold sleeper. Meaning , I HATE A COLD NIGHT. By using this bivy shelter bag, I know I increased my bag temp by 6 degrees. It was 41 degrees outside and I was comfortable all night. It was the best nights sleep I have ever gotten in the backcountry. As you all know, the ratings on sleeping bags are somewhat suspect to their degree rating. Even with long johns and fully clothed, I get cold when I'm in a 40 degree bag and it get down to 43-45 degrees out. Not any more. It is a godsend on every aspect. The weight is negligible at 8 ounces and worth every penny! IT WORKS!!!!!

I really liked the small size from the standpoint of including it in an emergency camping standpoint. I opened it on the family room floor and got my 6 foot size into it easily. It is roomy and shoes could be easily worn. I had my son inlaw try it. He is about 6 foot 4 inches. His head did stick out some but the hood could be used to advantage. He thought it was workable. I have not tried it outdoors yet. My only concern would be lying on top of snow or rocks since I expect the cold would be transmitted thru direct contact of this type. I suppose heavy clothing could help. I would suggest instructions for ideas for use on top of snow or rocks. I would suggest that the company build an exterior envelope to use as a cushion of grass, twigs or clothing. It was easy to repack it into original small size.

Great as a warm weather bag. Great as an emergency piece of gear in your daypack. And finally, great protection for a down bag.
I sleep in a single wall tent in the winter. This turns my 40 degree down bag into a 3 season or 20 degree bag, that can handle heavy condensation. Just get it!

Used on AT Section hike this year Aug Sept in Maine.
It worked well in a tent down to about 50 degrees.
In the 40's it started to get cold. Bought a Silk liner and used a full length pad and everything was great. This should be on the list for warm weather AT Hikers. Through hikers should consider it for the warm weather part of the hike. Saved at least a pound over sleeping bag options. Yes it is worth it.

Comments about SOL Escape Bivy:
I bought this Bivy because most of my camping is warm weather beach weather camping with ocassional passing rain. I slept under a canopy with a free standing hammock and this bivy in about 70 degf breezy weather. This was a test to see if the bivy could be used alone, as most of the time I will not be carrying a 20lb folding hammock on a hike :) . I usually get cold easily so I wore a sweatshirt and thermal long pants. The bag did a good job of balancing between breathing and staying warm.
The first night, there was no condensation on the inside of the bag at all. I did find cinching the bag close to my face helped heat from escaping and did not make me claustraphobic. Since we were sleeping only under a canopy, the wind was strong and it did an acceptable job of blocking the wind, but stronger gusts could be felt by my feet which did not have socks on.
The second night it rained hard during the middle of the night. Since the winds were so strong, the wind blew rain onto the bag since no where was safe under the canopy. This initially was not a problem, as the bag did it's job of blocking water from the outside and still breathed. However, as the hammock got wetter and wetter, the water began to puddle in the middle, and at that point, it seeped through the sleeping bag and I got wet in that spot.
If using this bag without any other cover, it can handle various amounts of water for short periods of time, but hours of direct contact with falling water will allow moisture to enter. The main problem seemed to be laying in puddled water as I was comfortable up until the time water puddled. I think the description of "water resistant" is accuate, but I wouldn't try to use it in any weather colder than 65 deg f unless I was inside a shelter or tent. I'm going to experiment with using emergency blankets aka space blankets aka pieces of shiny mylar to make a small shelter to protect this bivy from puddling water and direct rain. Once I figure this out, I will have a great solution for beach camping while backpacking without a tent!
I will try this bivy while sleeping in a tent, it may end up replacing my regular sleeping bag. I'm concerned without any breeze it could get stuffy inside, but I'll test it next month and try to update this review.

The Escape Bivvy I bough in hopes of having a Ultra Light summer sleeping bag. It is rated as a 52 degree farenheit bag, I am a cold sleeper and at 52 degrees with minimal amount of layers on, I was still cold. I do how ever think the bag is build well, easy to role up and put back in the stuff sack. The hood is nice and it breathes well. I am 6 foot tall 185 LB and the bag is roomy. It is semi Rectangular ( half way between a rectangular and mummy bag ). I love that it has a zipper, you do still have to shimmy your way into it. I went backpacking the other day, and it got way colder than I thought it would, after that I don't go hiking or backpacking with out it. This is a grate product.
