Rated5out of5bySafiredreamsfromWonderful PurchaseI purchased this product to filter water for my 3-4 day hike and camp on the Kalalau Trail in Na Pali. It was teh best purchase I had made for the trip. It is easy to assemble and use, easy to clean, and the water tastes wonderful. It is decently lightweight and easy to pack in. Pumps water quickly. Wonderful Purchase.

Rated5out of5byTerasecfrom10 yrs and still goinghave had my katadyn hiker for 10 yrs now,
i use it on my land filtering the nastiest of swamp water, also use it while kayaking filtering lake water,
some others now come with higher capacity filters, but this filter is easy to clean, and can surpass its listed life span with some care,
store it dry, and every season or so run some bleached water through it
havent had a problem and hoping for many more years out of it and will probably replace it with another,

Rated5out of5bySwagman1955fromGreat Filter, Great Product Support!I don't have time to gravity filter and don't like the taste of bleach/iodine or chemicals in my water. Katadyn filter is very basic and works well in the field. The filter removes all harmful sediments and organic organisms that can mess up your digestive system. My only gripe about this filter is the plastic body and components. They are prone to failure or breakage at the most insolvent moments. On the upside, Katadyn fully supports this product and has mailed me, free of charge, replacement housing and a plunger. Not many companies will stand behind their merchandise like this anymore. Highly recommend with the caveat to be mindful of the body for separations and splits, as well as be gentle with the pump handle. Don't gorilla force it! Other pros are easy to clean, and swap out filter cores. Two thumbs up.

Rated5out of5bypack_mulefrom18 years and still works great!I bought this filter 18 years ago for a trip to the Boundary Waters. I like cold water and hate waiting for tablets to work, so this was the way to go. This filter has pumped 100's of gallons of water for me and my friends over the years from the Boundary Waters, PA, CO, ME and probably many other places I've inhabited since it was new! I'm so glad they still make filters for it. That's actually why I'm writing this review, I'm online tonight buying another cartridge for it. This pump will give you a work out, and if the water is silty/murky wrap a bandana or piece of cloth around the acorn. When you get home pull it apart dry everything out and you will have many years of great use!

Rated5out of5byHalf Pint 1fromGreat FilterGreat filter. Works awesome and the water tastes great! They only downfall is, if you need to filter a lot of water, your arm gets tired from pumping. Other than that, loving my filter.

Rated4out of5byA CfromSolid FilterI've owned this for 10yrs and run it in conjunction with a Sweetwater silt filter on the intake side. This is a very durable, reliable combo and I have no complaints. I've just replaced the element for the first time as the pump's slowed down a little bit over the years.
I use it for 3-4 weeks a year of backpacking with a few odd days of remote car camping where there isn't a well pump for water. Most of the source water I filter is from clear running mountain streams, lakes and snowmelt runoff in the N Rockies, with the occasional batch of silty glacial stream water which I let settle in a dromedary before filtering.
I had one failure last year where the intake hose nipple broke while I was removing the hose to pack it into it's bag on the last water fill hiking out on a 4 day trip. I could have kept filtering by sticking the butt end of the filter in the water so it wouldn't have cut the trip short or relegated me to boiling if it'd happened earlier. When I got to town I bought a $3 threaded brass fitting with a hose barb, screwed it into the intake recess of the pump body and it's performed perfectly since. In fact it's probably stronger since the more vulnerable plastic nipple is gone.
Here's my post trip maintenance procedure when I return home: Flush it with a 1/2 to 1 oz of bleach added to a liter of water in a Nalgene as per the mfg instructions & thoroughly pump the excess solution out. I then remove the elements on the the Hiker and Sweetwater silt filter and let them air dry a couple days. I lube the rubber O ring around the element before reassembly with the provided silicone lube, you don't need a wrench to remove the element the next time when you do this! Lastly, I remove the plunger retainer clip, pull the plunger out, lube the plunger O ring seal with the silicone lube and reassemble. Also, if the outer layers of the silt filter element get dirty, and they will, I shave them off with a pocket knife as needed and replace after a 2 or 3 shaving cycles. I know I wouldn't have gotten 10yrs out of the main element, no clogs, without the Sweetwater pre-filter!

Rated4out of5byBuzman429fromSolid product that meets expectationsI recently took this filter on a backpacking trip with seven guys in Rocky Mountain National Park. Acting in tandem with another pump of a different brand that was supplied by my friend, for four days this pump handled a large workload of consistent pumping and filtration. Pumping was tiring over time and I knew ahead of time to handle this pump with "kid gloves", but I treated it with respect and it accomplished everything I could have asked for it. I also love the little storage bag that comes with it for easy storage and travel. I only had two minor complaints regarding this product: (1) The small plastic covers for the intake and output nipples are easy to lose. In fact, I lost one on my trip. I wish that replacement nipple covers came with this product; (2) Bring an extra plastic bag or two with you on long trips to store the contaminated input hose, because the plastic bag provided with the product will quickly wear out on you, making it difficult to separate the contaminated input hose from the clean output hose within the storage bag.

Rated4out of5byjballezafromBest Filter for backpackingBest bang for your buck. The only problem is that the zipper on the plastic bag that holds some of the items broke easily, but you can just replace it with a ziplock bag.
