Comments about Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter:
This filter is great because it is compact and lightweight. It is easy to use. Just connect the tubes and you are ready to filter. I did buy my own tubing to customize the lengths of the tubes. Both input and output tubes are about 3 ft., but I just wanted it a little longer. I did this partly because the tubing that came with mine didn't allow me to disconnect it from the output port of the filter. It was stuck on so I cut it off and used my own tubing. Works like a charm now. I love that I can connect it directly to my quick-link camelbak pack. It also comes with a water bottle connector so all bases are covered. Great product.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter:
After years of using the MSR miniworks ex, we decided to switch to the lighter, faster Katadyn model - the new black model of the Hiker Pro had just come out, so we went with that.
We may be extremely unlucky, but we have gone through three units this summer, and all of them broke.
Unit 1: the quick-release valve stopped working
Unit 2: the unit stopped working on day 3. It didn't start filtering slower, it just stopped filtering. After much time at REI discussing with various people, they figured the pump was broken, that this was very rare but can happen.
Unit 3: THis one lasted three trips! One day 3 of trip 3, again, it stopped working. Not a drop of water. Back to REI we go!
From the other reviews, it looks like there might be some serious quality issues with this model. I really wanted this to work, as it is so much faster than the MSR, but I guess we're sticking to the miniworks for now!
On another note, there is very little information from the manufacturer on how to maintain your filter: these filters need to be rinsed regularly, and air-dried before being stored.
Thanks REI for your return policy, and all your great staff that tried to help us with this problem!

Comments about Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter:
I have owned two Hiker Pros. Both filters failed unexpectantly and without warning. I hike often, and am exposed to varying quality water, but mostly clear, low sediment water. The filter works fine when first purchased, although the two hose system I find cumbersome to use often requiring a balancing act between pumping and holding your water container. However, notwithstanding my following by the book maintenance directions, on two longer hikes of 4 days and 8 days, the pump filter clogged and was not useable. It is useless to try to clean the filter in the field, only replacement with a new filter, which costs almost as much as buying a new pump, solves the problem.
For the serious hiker, who depends on his water pump and needs in field cleaning ability, I would not recommend this product - MSR is better- although MSR is slightly heavier.
For the occassional hiker who does short trips where surprise failure can be coped with by using other water cleaning processes, the product is exceptable and lives up to advertisment promises, with the exception that I do not believe one can pump the number of liters of water it says can be pumped before filter replacement is required.
I switched to MSR, because I do not like having to worry about when the filter will fail in the field.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter:
I found this product to be very easy to use, compact, and a lifesaver. It field strips down so you can clean it if necessary, although I never had to do that in the 5 days I was out in backwoods Vermont. This isn't the first time I've used it either, and it's never failed me. It comes with an adapter so you can hook it directly into a camelback line, where comes my one wish...I use an osprey hydration bladder, and wish it would have an adapter for that as well. There is one thing that I think is a downside. The sealable bag that keeps the clean side separate will fail. I found that it splits at the top near the bags opening. That being said...bring a ziplock bag and problem solved. Otherwise, a fantastic product.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter:
When i bought it, i was aware of the fact that it was not really field maintainable; you have to replace the element, which means that to do feild maintenance, you need to carry a spare element. But over the course of a couple of years of use, i kind of forgot about it because it seemed to work well. It does pump more quickly and more easily than some other pumps.
During my last backpacking trip, however, the element became clogged and it was no longer easier or quicker to pump than my old MSR; and there ws nothing i could do about it. I had to apply increasing pressure to the pump to get the water through and it took significantly longer. As a result of the increased pressure, the handle broke off of the shaft of the puping part, making it even more difficult and time consuming to pump.
I normally try to pump from clean water, but occasionally i do have to pump from turgid water and i do not know how often this can be done before the filter becomes clogged. Not being fully field maintainalbe would make it prudent to carry a spare filter element, which means that the weight advantage over other pumps is gone.
I would recommend this only for shorter trips, to avoid being stuck with a less than fully functional pump, and/or recommend carrying a spare element.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter:
About 8 years ago I bought a standard Katadyn Hiker, which broke in the middle of the hiking season last year. Seven years of professional use seemed like a good amount of time to me, so I bought the PRO model in the middle of last summer. It broke in the middle of a hike a few weeks ago after less than a year of use--one of the valves on the inside that forces water to go the proper way punctured, and now water pumps in and out from the inlet hose. In discussing this model with other hikers, I've come to the opinion that this model is much less durable and reliable than what Katadyn used to produce.

I have used this to filter water in the Rocky Mountains, and thus far have not gotten giarrdia, so it would seem it is working. The various fittings make it very easy to fill up your waterbottle, and it isn't too much work to do so with the efficient pump. Although I haven't been able to utilize all of the features yet, I am condfident based on its performance that they will work as advertised.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter:
After the third days use on a week long trip, the part with the hose disconnect on the bottom came out (inlet), along with a small rubber check valve, and I was not being rough with it. I concluded that the piece had a small dab of glue from the factory holding it to main body and that glue job failed. I fixed it by applying two dabs of super glue, and it worked great after that. It is more of a two person operation unless you have a dock or bridge to sit on. Those are the two main pitfalls, but it worked great otherwise. I have a friend with the same model (but his is grey, mine is black), and he has never had that part break off.

Comments about Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter:
So I had the earlier model of the Katadyn Hiker Pro (Blue Grey). It was solid and the only reason I don't have it anymore is because I have a buddy who is like Pig Pen from the Peanuts. You give him nice things and he finds a way to break them. I blame the whiskey after a long day on the trail. Bottom line the filter was impressive. So after the unfortunate incident with a stong, clumsy and slightly inebriated person I replaced it with the newer "Black" Katadyn Hiker Pro. When something changes to the color Black it's supposed to mean AWESOME, like AMEX Black Card and the SR71.
Well folks it's the opposite. In this case, and after reading several reviews, it seems the Black model has some major quality control issues that I hope Katadyn is paying attention to. Just like other readers on my first trip out BOOM! in the middle of pumping water for the next morning the intake hose and housing for it blew out. Plastic broke clean off. I felt the pumping becoming increasingly harder before this happened. Good thing we had enough Iodine for 7 people and it was our last night out.
It's going back and I'd like to know if Katadyn is addressing this common issue before buying another one.
What say you Charlie Brown?
