Rated5out of5byDiane mountaineer hikerfromSome help on sizing choices...I am a bit different in that I just have a Microsoft Surface Pro, about the size of an iPad but deeper since it is a full computer. The weight of it in my purse was hard on my shoulder so I decided to get a Timbuk2 Command along with the deluxe shoulder strap. All my hiking gear is from REI so I figured they'd help with this purchase too. Ordered XS and S, wanting the XS to work out, so more like a purse, but when it arrived even a tiny 7 X 10.5 tablet would not fit in the sleeve. The small works great and the quick release makes it easy to get on and off, good when I have a hat, etc. The handle on the command is good to grab when you do the quick release, and to carry short distances. Obviously the tablet/computer fit easily, even with the extra depth/width of its own padded sleeve, which I already had, but more to the point, it is good looking and all the things I have in my purse easily fit inside. It has a more European look than just the nylon, so while it is casual as a purse, it isn't too big to wear and use it in that way. The "Napolean pouch" is great for my wallet, so I can get to that without opening the flap of the silent bag (the buckles and no Velcro work perfectly). Keep my cell phone in the sleeve meant for an iPad. Keep my glasses in a hard case in the easy to access area designated for power cords. So other reviewers have covered all the pertinent things about using it for computers and travel...my reason for the review is to let you know that the XS is not going to fit anything you have if you have even the smallest tablet...maybe an iPad only, I don't know. But the small can work as a purse, hold all you need, and with the silent aluminum buckles cinched up tight, keeps the flap tightly closed. I also carry art materials in it. The under the flap zipper "pouches" are dysfunctional once you have the inside loaded...I just keep my keyless remote in one of them (again...looking at it from a purse point of view). Very tough, great for a tablet, looks enough like a purse to use that way. REI customer service was spectacular...phone help/store help/quick return of the one that didn't work. Highly recommend

Rated5out of5byroyce44fromQualityNote regarding laptop size: I have a 15.6" laptop and I tested it with both the medium and large. It will fit in the medium but it's a tight fit. The laptop is almost the same size as the slot at the medium size. Not as easy to slide in and out as the large, but also not terribly difficult either. I went ahead and got the large, and I'm glad I did, because I don't have any difficulty getting in and out, whereas at the medium I'd be struggling a little bit with it.
Overall, the bag is really nice. Smooth, cool, yet durable. The oxford nylon is really nice. The laptop compartment is really nicely padded. There's a strong, durable snapping mechanism on the strap that makes it highly adjustable and also prevents sliding.
A main problem for messenger bags is where the strap connects to the bag. This bag has a thick, durable plastic hook that connects to a metal triangle. The stitching is thick and strong.
The only thing I can foresee wearing down on the bag is the inner Velcro, which is itself pretty thick. The flap attaches itself to the bag with Velcro and so constantly opening and closing the flap will wear out the Velcro eventually. But, it's such thick Velcro that it will take a while. It also has nice quality metal connectors should the Velcro fail anyway.
Overall, the components are all high quality. I definitely recommend this bag.

Rated5out of5byRob the TeacherfromBest Bag EverI purchased this bag a few years ago while getting my teaching license. It is by far the best bag for college students. I have had other bags (backpacks and sling packs) but this one by far is in its own class. First of all, it is extremely durable. I have used it every day for over three years and it still looks almost new. While in college, I always carried a laptop, books, binders, umbrella, and other basic school gear every day. The bag handled it all beautifully. The zippers and stitching all still look great. I now use it everyday as a sixth grade teacher to carry my computer, books, and papers. I really do see this bag lasting at least another ten years. Another great feature is that it has a multitude of pockets and organizers. I also love the fact that it is basically rain proof which is great for college students walking around campus. I have some great gear bags made by reputable companies, but this one takes grand prize. I even ordered a Timbuk2 diaper bag because my wife and I have our first baby on the way. These bags are a little pricey, but you really do get what you pay for. I especially liked the Command Messenger in black because it has a professional look and I new if it lasted through college I could use it professionally. That was one of the best decisions I made.

Rated5out of5bystarmatter7fromI LOVE this bag! This is by far the best bag I've ever owned. I use it for generic laptop carrying usage, air travel, office, and mobile music recording components.
It's made so well, looks great and it's intuitive to use, highly functional, very roomy, excellent quality, nice storage configuration (pockets, etc) and all around awesome!
The TSA functionality is fantastic too. Just unzip and lay on the security scanner belt. No more having to pull evrything apart to get through airport security!
I also very much like the Napolean pocket under the front flap... provides easy access when everything is zipped up and strapped down. Secure enough for passports, but easy to access when needed.
The shoulder strap is nice to, with ample padding and comfortable even when the bag is full and heavy.
I've struggled with many laptop/messenger type bags before ... this one is luxury at a great price.
I would highly recommend this bag. I'm a new fan of Timbuk2 and will be looking for more products from them in the future.

Rated5out of5byIndyKayakerfromGreat sack! I love it!!!I love this bag! I use it every day to bring my laptop (full-size MacBook Pro) and other essentials from home to the office. Additionally, I use it to bring my work clothes (and shoes) to the office when I ride my bike to work.

Rated5out of5byMatt The OgrefromJust what I was looking forSince getting the bag I've been using it almost exclusively for my commute to work by bicycle and ferry. It's a great bag for carrying everything I need for work and I really like all the different pockets and compartments. However it's not the best bag for cycling -- I miss the second strap commonly found on other messenger-style bags. The bag tends to rotate forward.
I discovered the other great feature of this bag when travelling to Costa Rica: The security friendly laptop compartment. Just unzip it, lie it flat and "Bob's your uncle" (you don't need to take your laptop out of the bag.)
Another big plus for me is the special tablet pocket inside the laptop area. It fits my iPad perfectly next to my MacBook Pro.
