Rated5out of5bySpine expertfromTop recommendation for my patients!!I actually bought them as I was researching the minimalist/barefoot movement for minimizing injury and strengthening the foot bed for many of my patients that would present with plantar fascitis and other foot/heel and knee problems. After years of fitting custom orthotics and wearing them for years myself, it made so much sense that we were actually "weakening" the foot by supporting it with even a flexible orthotic for excessive pronators and fallen arches. These shoes have been extremely refreshing. You want to put these on and then you'll end up looking forward to wearing them...AMAZING comfort while allowing the foot to do its own work. I have a high instep and arch, so I don't feel the small arch support present, yet don't want the shoe doing the work my arch is supposed to do. I run in them with a mid foot strike and absolutely love them...very organic even though there's a nice cushion. I also own zero barefoot shoes that I alternate in with these Pure Connects which are 4mm heel to toe drop, since a slow transition from traditional running shoes is required to minimize injury and allow the foot to build strength. Bonus: Since I am hooked as to the biomechanical and health benefits of building foot strength and yet staying very competitive, I also wear them for basketball and have found them reducing fatigue and lower back discomfort after 2 hours of straight games, 2x/week. They don't make a "minimalist" Basketball shoe other than Chuck Taylors, which I'm not going back to. So, if you're looking for a flexible yet very comfortable shoe that allows you to minimize heel to toe lift and build foot strength so you can do more of what you love, than I say give this shoe a chance, you won't be sorry.
I bought my first pair and couldn't stop sharing them with everybody and my patients, then I ordered two more pair of the Pure Connect 1's before they were all sold out...should have bought four pair. I thought only old guys did that. The only negative is that they could be more generous in the forefoot width, since I have a wide foot but not so much that I require E or EE width 95% of my shoes. They still get a 5 star. REI is simply top notch in service and customer satisfaction! I had ordered the first pair which fit a 1/2 size too small and everything went smoothly with returns, credit, no questions asked. Keep up the great work and I refer people all the time to REI for the best outdoor gear in Madison.

Rated1out of5bymarkelamfromDesign Flaw Makes Them UnwearableI bought these off the clearance rack to supplement my other minimalist shoes, a pair of Sauconies. I did two runs in them, and would give a rave review except for one deadly flaw: the left heel counter contains a small plastic nub that rubbed against my ankle, feeling like I had a thorn in my sock, and produced a nasty blister. I checked the sock closely--nothing there--and wore different socks the second time I ran in the shoes, so it was definitely the shoe. I don't know why the heel counters are so high--most running shoes have that portion cut out--and whatever caused the problem with the left shoe was also present in the right shoe, just not pronounced enough to rub against my heel. I returned the shoes for full credit.

Rated4out of5byTanagerfromGreat fit for women needing larger sizesI was looking for some minimalist/barefoot shoes. I loved the Merrell Women's Crush Glove Trail Running Shoe, but the largest size occasionally bumped the end of my longest toe, so that was out. With the average women's shoe a size 9, shoe manufacturers are missing a bet when they force women needing larger sizes into men's shoes.
When I was in the REI store, I saw these Brooks shoes and found they fit me perfectly -- nice width, plenty of toe room, colors not too bad, though far from being as attractive as the Merrells, and a nice sale price. In the store, on carpet, they felt great. When I took them on the first walk, it was another story -- at least at first.
When I first wore them, the arch bore all the weight. There was hardly any pressure on the forefoot or the heel. That might have been OK for running, but for walking it was a little weird. I use an orthotic heel lift on one side, but because there was no weight on the heels, it was having zero effect. When I took out the insoles, the odd sole effect was less pronounced. Now after a few days, I have been able to put the insoles back in.
I'm still adapting to walking in minimalist shoes, but I can say that they are very comfortable, with no rough edges inside, even without socks. They are very lightweight and have good ventilation in the forefoot area. With the mesh uppers, they would probably make decent boating shoes. They won't be too great in Oregon when it starts raining again, but for now, they are just fine.
As other reviewers have noted, they are somewhat narrower than most men's shoes. For me, with average width feet for a woman, that's perfect.

Rated5out of5byKamjafromterrific fitting shoes for narrow feetafter 2 years running in vibram and merrell minimalist shoes, my 40 year old body started to tell me that I needed more "cush" in my running shoes. After 4 miles, my knees would start to hurt running in minimalist shoes. I found it hard to transition back to traditional running shoes so I started looking into the "tweener" shoes. After reading the reviews and discovering that these shoes fit on the narrow side, I decided to give them a try. Also, the price is really good too.
I really like these shoes. They are comfortable, and my knees don't bother me anymore when i reach the 4 mile mark. they have just the right amount of cushion for my flat footed running style. I especially love the narrow glove like fit for my narrow feet. I love the fact that the eyelets don't touch when I lace up these shoes!

Rated5out of5bySplebfromRepeat purchaseI have only been running semi-seriously for about 3 years after 15+ as a smoking couch potato. Now run 10-15 miles a week minimum (along with bike and swim), have used these for more than 200 miles, just now showing tread wear - as advertised, they have helped immensely with improving my running form so I finally feel efficient when I run - so I bought a second identical pair for when these do wear out.
