Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:

I got this mostly for use as a day hike pack, and I haven't used it a ton yet, but it works very well. Good capacity, comfortable and lots of good straps and adjustments. I wish it had about 1 more external small pocket, but otherwise it is what I was looking for.

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:

I needed a reasonably sized daypack for a 6-day hike on Mt Kilimanjaro. I stressed over whether to use this 30L bag or go for something closer to 40L. I needed enough room for 3L of water (all Nalgene bottles from REI of course), some clothing layers, and minimal gear (everything else was carries by porters). Every pound on the mountain counts; you need enough room to carry the abovementioned items, but you don't want to get stuck carrying too much 'cause you have the room. This bag couldn't have been a better fit! I could cram my convertible winter coat inside and still have about 50% capacity left over for everything else. It ended up being bigger than I needed, which was a surprise. Access to the compartments was great. Adjustability on the fly was easy. One of the shock cord toggles broke off the cord, but cord still worked when I needed to secure my trekking poles. I plan to visit REI to see about a fix; no real worry there though. I plan to use this bag for anything short of a backpacking trip where I have to carry a sleeping bag, tent, pad, etc.

Great pack, has great space. Able to pack the essentials, some extra dry clothes. Waist pockets are great to get to snacks and lip balm quickly. outside mesh pockets are great to get things in n out fast and help by being able hang wet clothes out to dry while you continue on the trail.all around great pack for its intended use. padding does warm up your lower back a bit but not to bad if your wearing appropriate clothes. could use an extra small zippered pocket. tough, built durable. ykk zippers. nuff said. happy trails.

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:

I picked up this pack not too long ago as a replacement for my old day-pack. I am a college student who also works as an adventure trip leader at my university, which means I am invovled in everything from multi-day hiking, climbing, and mountain biking excursions to simply carrying my textbooks and laptop around.

This pack is perfect for what I was looking for: ample capacity for all my school materials as well as the ability to work as a comortable, low-bulk option for summer multi-day trips. The pack's extra lashing points make it easy to tie on extra gear such as rope, a tripod for my camera, and many other things. I was pleased to find that the side mesh pannels easily fit my 32oz. water bottle and keeps it secure.

Honestly, I have no complaints about this pack, while it may be a bit small for some, it fits my purposes well and that is all I expected it to do.

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:

My favorite pack broke earlier in the season and I was looking for a relatively in-expensive pack to get me through until my new pack was built.

For me this pack was used as my long-distance pack and performed brilliantly. It held all my gear and food for up to 4 days comfortably. My pack weight is typically between 15 and 20 lbs and I hike around 25-35 miles/day. With that said, the pack never became uncomfortable and held up beautifully.

Construction is nice and it has good sized pockets on the hipbelt and a nice large pocket at the top. The 3 mesh pockets are one of the best features, as they can be stretched out to hold a lot of extra gear. For me the back mesh pocket was regularly used to stow my wet tent (which gives you an idea of how far it can stretch). The mesh is somewhat delicate though, as I had a couple of small blowouts. The zipper top entry is a nice touch. The shoulder straps are a good width and have the proper amount of padding. The pack is a little heavy for the size but for most folks that will be a non-issue.

For a day pack, which is what it's billed as, you can't go wrong.

              -Cheers!

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:

I bought this pack to use on warm weather day hikes. As an avid day hiker (I get out every weekend all year round) I wanted something smaller than my 38L Osprey 'winter' pack.

After doing some research I decided to give this pack a try. My first impression was that REI had incorporated a lot of features in this pack that were similar to the features I liked about Osprey packs.

However, I soon realized that this pack is a lesser imitation. The materials felt lighter and of a lesser quality than my Osprey pack, and after about six weekend trips I started having doubts about the durability of the pack.

When I got out on the first long hot summer day hike of the year I got a big surprise - massive heat rash under the shoulder straps. I've never had any issues with heat rash until then.

I switched back to the Osprey pack and didn't have any issues with heat rash on my next few hikes. I suspect that the foam used in the shoulder straps must trap moisture more, or holds in heat more.

I may return this pack and get a similar sized Osprey pack.

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:

Used this pack to hike up Wheeler Peak in New Mexico, on a day hike. It worked great... able to carry a 3 liter water bladder in the provided compartent, jacket, rain gear, first aid kit, food etc.... with room to spare. Pack felt great, hardley noticed it. My husband had the same pack and compleined about the shoulder straps until he made some adjustments, then he was fine too. Also liked the many ways to hook other items on the outside of pack (like treking poles when not in use). Have used the pack for other day hikes with positive results.

One might be able to use this pack for an overnighter, if one takes minimual about of gear.

My only complaint is the that the pockets on the hipbelt are too small....need to be bigger to fit in a camera etc, so it can be easy to reach.

Great back for the money and we got them on sale which was even better! Great product REI !

Comments about REI Traverse 30 Pack:

I have been using my REI Traverse 30 for more than 2 years now (model from 2010). This backpack rocks! I've been taking it everywhere: biking trips, day hikes, skiing, and to school. Very comfortable, adjustable and easy to organize. Never regretted purchasing it, not for one moment.
It got pretty worn out eventually; so I went to REI today with the only intention to buy the same exact model. To my great disappointment the completely remodeled it. The general shape and straps were kept more or less the same. But now it only has 2 zipper-closeable compartments instead of original 5! How are you supposed to organize your stuff with just 2 compartments? Of course there are 3 stretchy pockets on the outside, but there is nothing to prevent things from falling out of those...
Very disappointing. Will probably have to look at different brands for now. But I really wish they could revert the design back to what it was in 2010.
P.S. I would give the old model 5 stars, 1 to the new one, so it is 3 on average. Everything else I indicated above is for the old model.
