Novara Portal Bike - 2014 is rated 3.3333 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basic, but nice bang for the buck. It is a good bike, for the price. Seems to be more of a starter bike. The biggest issue I had was the saddle. I had to replace it, because it was making my man parts go numb....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun beginners bike It's a good intro bike for mountain biking. After several months of biking, I haven't had a single problem with the bike, while friends riding the same trails on more expensive bikes have snapped their derailleurs, gotten flats, had their chains come off, etc. The only issue that I have noticed is that my third large gear wheel is bent. Fortunately, it's not a frequently used gear, so I have not had issues with that. The bike is a bit heavy, and the frame makes it more challenging than it should be to fit onto a bike rack, however the price makes these minor concerns.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Novara Portal is a disappointment I bought this bike for use on rail trails, gravel roads and and the occasional single track. I have yet to use it on single track for I fear for my safety. I use it mainly for commuting to work. I plan on returning it for a refund as soon as I replace it with a new bike. For the 3rd time since purchase, I have had to take it in for broken spokes. I have a tour bike with thousands of miles that has yet to break a spoke. Do NOT buy this bike. The wheels are cheap and it is dangerous to ride on single track for that reason. If you do buy, check spokes regularly/daily.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good basic bike I use it for riding around a flat urban area for recreation. I looked at cruiser-style bikes, but they didn't feel right - I couldn't stretch out my legs when I peddled. They also seemed to have erratic steering. I chose this because I wanted a more traditionally proportioned bike, with derailleurs. I like it, but wish it came with street tires rather than knobby trail tires. One thing I really like is the shifters. They're extremely easy to use, and I find myself shifting more frequently as a result. Shifting down when coming to a stop is particularly easy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from fit me, but not my life I want to be able to take this bike to the bike park and mt bike trails with my husband and kids. We live 1,000 vertical feet above Boulder, and my kids and I aren't ready to ride all the way home, so I need to be able to take it down to town in order to ride. The problem started when I wheeled the bike out to my truck- the small triangular frame would not fit on my bike rack. I've got a SwingDaddy 4- and the only way we could get the bike on was to shove it onto the very tips of the rack, where it shoved the tie-ons back out of the way, as well. This did not feel safe to me. I went back into the store and got the short bike gal to come out and help, and she told me, "that's just the way it goes", that her bike is always out on the tips of her rack as well. On my way back home, I stopped at a local bike shop where I had previously test-ridden a Rockhopper. I tried it on the rack, and it had about an inch more room than the REI bike. Since the REI was not on sale at REI, the Rockhopper was about the same price, so I had to go with it and return the REI bike. Bikes that fit you are good, but they also have to fit your racks, in order to take them biking!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sweet ride I've been riding this bike for almost a month now. Been on minor off road trails but, mostly paved roads. Shifting for overpasses, trails, and stop/starts has been very fluid. It's relatively light weight, rugged construction makes this bike nimble. I changed the seat for a more comfortable padded one and will add a handle bar lift kit for my comfort. Otherwise, I couldn't do better for the price and type of bike! I really like this bike!
