Rated1out of5bycheckingacctinfofromPoor fit, much, much too longI've used REI convertible pants for more than 10 years. This latest version doesn't live up to previous designs.
**The lower leg is now more easily removable. I never had an issue with the old design but I see this is an improvement.
**The belt along the back is no longer in a long hidden area. The belt would get twisted back there and it was hard to untwist/flatten. Now, it's easy to access/flatten. Still twists up though – since I need to roll up the waist since fit is so odd.
What hasn't improved/gotten worse:
**Pants are now super long. It is impossible to get them shortened due the zippers and cuffs so if they are too long, you are stuck. I'm 5'6". These pants are about 3-4 inches too long – see photo. If we figure half our height is in our legs, that means these would be a good length for someone 6-8 inches taller than me. So, if you are 6 feet to 6'2" this might be right for you. (Yes, I'm reviewing the 'plus' design not the 'tall' design.)
**The fit is odder. They are too tight and too loose all at the same time. They need to have real women try on these pants in all the different sizes. The plus sizes don't seem like they have been. The lower legs twice as wide as possilbly needed – see photo. I sometimes wear knee braces under these pants and they are still oversized in the lower leg.
Waist to top of leg is too long. If I pull these fully up, the 'waist' hits many inches above the belly button. I used to buy REI's petites but now would need a 18P which they do not make. I know I am short waisted but not THAT short waisted.
These are great for hiking/backpacking. They hold up under unbelievable abuse. I've hiked hundreds of miles in them and the seams, fabric, etc have held up. One pair lost the snap at the waist but the belt continued to work. One green pair has slightly faded to a different color along the back of the waist where it is constantly soaked in sweat but it is hardly noticeable. The same pair got accidently singed by campfire embers and now has tiny holes in the lower legs. The pants kept on going. They've been used and washed many times since the holes stayed the same size.
**Lightweight / Sun Protection
I wear these as full length pants for desert hiking. They offer full sun protection so no need for sunscreen on the lower legs but light enough that I don't die from the heat. (Yes, I'd rather wear them as shorts but I'm not fan of melanoma.)
Pockets get bigger, pockets get smaller. This design has slightly smaller pockets and the cargo pockets only have one compartment. The good thing about this is you look less bulky. The older style big pockets made me look like a hobo/street person. The bad thing – my hobo/street person pocket fit more junk. I'd have so much in them I could feel the weight trying to pull down my pants. ;-) So, maybe slightly smaller is better.
Anyways – these pants have so much potential but the sizing and length is just unfortunate. It is depressing to see the same sizing comments over and over again for two years but no change to length. I really hope REI makes a change soon – we haven't all stopped hiking in the past two years.

Rated1out of5byMLindaGfromPoor FitI was able to go to the store and try these pants on.........I am a plus size 22.....tried the 24 on and while it was big in the waist it was tight in the hips and the legs just let me say they were so big and sloppy looking! They need to find some plus size models before making these pants in the future. Very poor fit!

Rated3out of5bymehlbfromOdd cutThe cut is indeed bizarre. Belly and hip areas are too tight, but next size up is too big. Does not allow freedom of movement sufficient for hiking and climbing. I bought these pants anyway because it is nearly impossible to find any similar pants for large women. Also, they are quite long. Fortunately, I am tall, but they are long even for me. The legs in the calves are too wide and floppy. Also, the the pockets have gotten smaller, which is annoying in camping pants.
I just hope these don't split open in the seat or thighs while I am hiking.

Rated2out of5bykayefromOdd FitPant design is very awkward for average height woman. Notice picture shows male model-pant design fits taller male body (i.e. short length hits around knee area, pant length definitely needs hemming which is difficult due to side zipper & velcro closing). Very unflattering fit that gave a boxy, heavy look.
Definitely keeping other REI pants purchased at same time & returning these.
