The little cup on top came unglued from its black base after I had it a couple months. I glued it back together once, but it didn't work, so I just tossed the top cup and use the screw in plug only. BUT I still love this thermos and use it every day because it keeps my coffee piping hot. Toss it on the bicycle and go! One day I forgot it, came home from work 8 hours later, and the coffee was STILL warm enough to drink. Love it.

The best thing about this vaccum bottle is that it really keeps things hot or cold. I can fill this with coffee or hot chocolate in the morning, hike all day, and it's still hot when I makes stops. I also use one for work. I love using the little lid cup. I can pour a little at a time throughout the morning and the rest stays hot in the bottle. I would like to buy another one with the option to easily drink straight from the bottle and keep it sealed. That way I can drink my coffee while driving to work or the trail. I bought the 1-litter vacuum bottle for my father-in-law who is a truck driver and he loves it too.

I take my kids snowboarding every weekend we can possibly go and put sandwiches and drinks in a cooler pack for lunch. I wanted to take a thermos with my own coffee because mine is the best but I couldn't find a size that would last me all day. I ended up getting two of these, one for hot water for making hot chocolate for the kids and one for coffee for me. They fit perfectly in my cooler and the liquid stays hot for nearly 24 hours. The first time we used this the day went from bad to worse and we ended up having car trouble and the hot chocolate and hot coffee were the only things that got us through the night. I was stunned that the liquids were still boiling hot since I had made them 18 hours before. When I went to clean the thermos' the next morning, the liquid was still very hot. I am extremely impressed with these. They are easy to handle, hold a about 4 cups of coffee and are very easy to clean. I would highly recommend.

This has been an excellent product. I've never done a heat test, but can attest to the ability of this thermos to hold heat. Beverages are often still warm 24 hours after they are poured into the thermos. I guess the only complaint is that the outer lid is sometimes awkward to thread on. Mine is at least five years old, so maybe this has been corrected.

Love this thermos for car camping. It is heavy but it has a simple design - you remove the cap to pour out the contents, so you won;t be trapping bacteria.

We used it to make our morning coffee real quick and easy - we used the campfire exclusively for cooking and boiling water, so the night before we'd put boiling water into the thermos. It was still very hot in the morning in spite of the fog and cool weather. We were able to make great hot coffee even before we got the fire going! Absolutely awesome.

The .5 liter version of this thermos cannot match the performance of the liter thermos. It will only keep things warm for a few hours. So defintiely go with the liter size if you need to keep things hot for 12 hours or more.

I have been extremely pleased with this thermos. It holds about 6 cups, by the coffee pot measurements and will retain hot temperatures for hours and hours. I use it to provide myself with small cups of coffee (8oz) throughout the day and it has kept the coffee at hot, drinkable temperatures for over 12 hours with this kind of usage. My only complaint is that if the container is laid on its side, the heat transfers and is lost through the lid and lip. After a few hours it is still hot and drinkable, but not as hot as it would be if it remained upright. Use it with this in mind and you'll be fine.

This is my second REI thermos bottle and I am still using both, but both are separating at different places where they are not supposed to: About 10 years ago I had a smaller (0.5 L) stainless steel vacuum bottle Made in Korea and the cup separated into a plastic cup and a metal cover. I took it to REI Customer Service and they refused to replace it. The current complaint is about my newer 0.95-L stainless steel (silver) vacuum Made in China #10-C0459-014; #0 4160 423300 5 where the gasket comes off the plug. When it happened the first time, we found a black rubber ring in the sink after washing the dishes and we did not know where it came from. The next day we used the thermos bottle on an outing and the contents leaked all over the back pack. We found the cause was the missing gasket and we replaced it. Yesterday I returned from a hike to a mountaintop and when I unscrewed the plug at sea level, the higher air pressure rushed in with a pop and pushed the gasket from the plug into the puddle of liquid below and we had to fish it out before we could wash the bottle. I looked at the reviews for the newer (colored) vacuum bottles and they seem to have the same problem.

After reading the prior reviews, I bought this bottle to take coffee with me. I enjoy the fact that the thing keeps your beverage warm for a number of hours and has the cup with it. It works exactly as I expected. One thing not mentioned elsewhere is the fact that the bottle stopper has grooves cut in it so that you can pour your beverage without taking it all the way out. This keeps everything clean.

My only real qualm with the bottle is the fact that the finish scratches easily. I would have rather had a more durable coating. However, this is something I'd consider to be very minor.

I have been using an older model, slightly shorter, squatter REI 1 liter vacuum bottle for ski mountaineering for years. I asked for and received a second one for those long days when one bottle of hots is just not enough.
After trying it out on my first bc ski day of the year I noticed that the cap felt quite hot at the top of the hill, and also oilcanned when I poured water in it.
So I decided to perform a test. Filling both bottles with boiling water and leaving them in my garage overnight. Unfortunately these have not been very cold nights, so it wasn't a very rigorous test, as might be expected in a true mountaineering situation. However, after 24 hours, the difference in temperature between the two bottles was 10 degrees: 140 vs 150F. The older bottle won.
Why? The old bottle loses less heat through the lid (it feels colder) and has a squatter shape, while the newer bottle is taller (the old one has less surface area). In a real-life worst-case situation, where it's -10F vs my 25-40F test this 10 degrees difference would be magnified: tepid vs steaming tea.
REI should be improving their products with every iteration, not taking a step backwards. I'll be returning this and trying out a different brand, perhaps Primus.

This, by far, is the best coffee thermos I have ever purchased. Initially, I was like, "[$]?! That's pretty spendy for a coffee thermos!" but this thermos keeps drinks super hot or freezing cold all day. For example, I filled mine up at 8 AM this morning. I got stuck in meetings all day and didn't get a chance to finish my morning coffee. I just opened it up, at 2:38 PM, and my coffee is still hot and, crazy enough, still tastes like it was just made. Amazing!
