No need to break it in. Right out of the box, completed a 10 miles hike through dirt, rocks, boulders, creeks, side of cliffs and this hiking shoes were able to handle it all. Suggest getting 1/2 size larger to accommodate good wool hiking socks.

I have found this shoe to be very good for general hiking. I cover around 900 trail miles per year in all weather and terrain. Some years ago I rejected this shoe because the soles were not heavy duty enough, that seems to have been fixed. I have had foot surgery and require a shoe with a wide toe box and this delivers. I buy a half size larger than my regular shoe size to allow for good hiking socks, and do add my own inserts for the best arch support. Over the years I've hiked in many of the boots REI carries, and these are among the best of the low sided choices I've used.

I bought these a month before going to Big Bend and walked the streets and trails in the neighborhood to get ready for the trails there. I thought I would need higher ankle boots for ankle support but could not find any comfortable enough. So I just took these to Big Bend and walked and hiked all sorts of trails. My feet were never tired and they had great traction. When I got home, I purchased another pair in case these wear out in the years to come. They were just so perfect that I knew I would always want them and I was afraid after awhile, they may change the style, etc. Got them while I could.

Color and style acceptable most events that a woman can wear slacks. Excellent choice for an individual on their feet all day. I worked 4/10 hour days and the shoes decreased my back and knee discomfort, less fatigue. Excellent travel shoes for constant walking in the city or hiking, suitable and dry in all kinds of weather.

I bought these shoes specifically for my first trip to Yosemite. I did two days of easy hikes around waterfalls and in wet/snowy conditions. The shoes performed superbly, keeping my feet warm, dry and comfortable. The only trouble I had with them was that the laces came untied a lot - even if I double-knotted them.

I previously had an old pair of Merrill's I loved and wore them as an everyday shoe. I looked to replace them a year ago when they had worn through. This shoe was the closest thing I could find but its not waterproof!! I decided to go ahead and give them a try. Honestly I am so disappointed that I am probably going to return them after a year (thank you REI return policy!) I attempted to wear them as a regular shoe and they were ok. One long weekend I went to Washington DC and brought these shoes as my primary shoes. BIG mistake! After one day of lots of walking I had blisters that were so bad they were bleeding through my socks. The sides of my feet and toes were killing me from the design of the shoe. My feet were so sore and uncomfortable the whole rest of the weekend and I had to go find another pair of shoes. I hate how they look on my feet - so big and bulky. They are so poorly shaped and the traction is not nearly as good as my old pair. These are going back to the store!
