Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest SOlite Sleeping Pad is rated 4.0714 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, warm and durable The RidgeRest SOLite is a tried and true sleeping pad by Therm-a-Rest and will keep you warm and comfortable when it's time to visit the Land of Nod of an eve. It's a closed-cell foam pad which is a great low-tech option that requires no pumps, extended bouts of breathlessness or a PhD in mattressology. We've taken ours to the Back of Bourke (see if you can find where that is!) and, well, back- and we loved it. STRENGTHS First and foremost- it works. The manufacturer claims the surface to have been aluminized to further increase heat reflection and have little valleys that act to trap heat. We can't comment much on what the boffins in the lab have done: We can tell you it is warm to sleep on. You can thank your lucky stars that you will not spend a single sleep-deprived night on a deflating pad the SOLite . This USA-made beauty is durable as heck. On the outside of a pack, it's world versus pad and it's world (0), pad (1)- certainly not something you expect from most foam pads let alone inflating ones. We've even had this on snow. The result? It didn't even get wet- nice! At 400g, it also ways virtually nothing and you honestly cannot even notice it's silent presence. Oh, and it will set you back a pittance ?? ranging from $20-40 USD. WEAKNESSES The RidgeRest SOLite is not without compromise. It's bulky. Bulk is much easier to deal with than, especially when it can be just strapped on the outside. But, I came up with an even better solution: Use it as a half pad! Crazy, right? Not really, most of your heat is lost through areas of high blood flow and in most seasons, you only need something under your torso. It goes further than this though- if you know it's going to get really cold, just bring the other half, it folds up just as well as before you cut it in half. BOTTOM LINE A warm, lightweight pad that is virtually indestructible and won't break the bank. The set-back? A little bulky. Full review at

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Closes-Cell Foam Pad I have used I have owned an original Ridgerest 3/4 length sleeping pad since I was 12 years old. I am now 26, and I had used that same exact sleeping pad three times this past summer. I have purchased a few other sleeping pads since, trying to find a good balance between weight and comfort, but I kept coming back to the Ridgerest pad, as it is hard to beat it's comfort, weight and warmth. In my quest for the perfect sleeping setup, for long distance hiking, I have used a 1.5" thick self-inflating sleeping pad (Big Agnes Hinman mummy cut: 26 oz) and also an inflatable 3.5" thick sleeping pad (Big Agnes Air Core mummy cut: 19 oz), as well as a few other cheap foam pads that were not very good at all (trying to go too light weight)... As for comfort, this pad is not quite as comfortable as the inflatables, but for utility it's awesome. If I'm car camping with my Fiance, I will take the inflatables. Weight is not a concern, and I'm able to sleep well at rocky and rooty campsites. If I am backpacking and know I can chose my campsite, I will take the Ridgerest now. As for the reason I bought this, my current pad only goes down to my knees, and I needed the longer length for fall camping. This is a very warm pad, especially for the weight (I measured 13.55 oz). I figured if the 3/4 length is comfortable the full length should be as well. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. I use this pad as my pack frame by putting it inside my pack "burrito style", whereby I put the other gear inside of it. I use a 45 liter REI Flash 45 pack with it most of the time. My conclusion here is, if you're a sleeper that doesn't mind or prefers a stiffer mattress, then this pad can't be beat. Hands down the best foam pad I've ever tried. Great utility as a pack frame, and quick to setup and take down when compared to inflatables.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what its supposed to be First off I have both the solite and the regular model. Both solid gear choices. Indestructible pads allowing to be your seat or sleeping pad. Obviously this product was not meant for comfort. I am a minimalist backpacker who is comfort driven. This pad is good enough for the tough guys and gals. Now that I have been packing for 8 years constantly improving gear to lighter and more comfort I find myself still buying these pads. I have slept many nights on snow and glacier ice with just the one pad, which was enough insulation from the icy floor. However now I am doing monster miles each day so I need to have extremely deep sleeping, which one these pads I do catch myself tossing and turning but I never EVER get cold.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from does what it says it does! I use this model for car camping as it is a few inches wider than the folded versions. I put it under by Q-Core air mattress and like to have a few inches of extra pad on each side. The reason I do this is because the QCore will actually deflate when you sit on it or put all of your weight in a small concentrated area (getting up or down, etc). This mat just prevents damage or pain by any rocks, pebbles, etc. It also serves as an additional layer of insulation between me and the ground. Keep in mind this rolled version will want to stay curved once it is un-rolled (especially the inner tightest rolls). Perhaps storing it flat might help with the foam wanting to remember the rolled shape, but I have not tried that yet (the curves aren't really a big deal once you lay on it). If you are looking for a backpacking pad the folded versions are a few inches narrower and fold up much smaller.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable and reliable insulation. The only pad I've never woke up to find flat. Don't get me wrong, I prefer an inflatable, but sooner or later they always let me down. Pairing them up with a closed cell like this atleast gives you a back up. In some situations it could be the difference that gets you through the night. On several occaisions I've loaned out my inflatable and slept on just this closed cell. I do just fine with that, but I've also spent countless nights on bare ground and hard floors. So I'm not exactly the "princess and the pea". By itself, it may not be enough for softies. I have the 48" pad which I pack by rolling it around my tent, then sliding both into a sack. Adds minimal bulk/weight for the extra assurance it provides. I pack as light as possible, but this is one area where I'm willing to take on a few oz's. Giving it five stars. Closed cell pads aren't luxurious, but among all the choices in that niche this is as good as it gets.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Kept my sleeping bag warm under a bivy The inflatable pads are way overpriced IMO. Don't really see any reason to buy inflatable pads over this one, unless you cant carry this on the outside of your pack. In fact, Therm-A-Rest website clearly shows that the insulation factor for this pad is the same as some of the 100 dollar inflatable pads. Bottom line: not uncomfortable but not too comfy, provides some good resistance from the hard packed forest. Will keep you warm and packs easy on the outside of pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No More Cold Ground This won't make the ground soft, especially in Arizona where the dirt is like sleeping on rock, but it will make the ground warmer. This pad is bulky but lightweight and does a great job of reflecting your body heat back up at you just as advertised. It'd be fine for backpacking if you aren't too concerned with the size of things that are being strapped to your pack. Find a light length of cloth or rope to tie this thing up for storage and transport. If you're car camping and want a softer bed look into cheap egg crate foam as an added layer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Therma rest SO lite Using this product for a through hike on the JMT. I tested some new equipment in the back yard and this was one of them. very light and comfy. on the trail I will be so tired all I will need is a little comfort for sleeping. this is light enough . it must be carried on the out side of pack. my pack is a bit smaller than some but it weight is a huge factor so Im very happy with it!
