REI Hobitat 4 Tent is rated 4.44 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cool car camping tent Bought this tent when my GF said she wanted to camp in a tent that she could stand up in. Reasonable request so I added the Hobitat 4 to my "herd" of tent options that I own. Now this is for car camping only, there's no backpacking situation that this would ever make sense for. That said; Pros: 1. Super roomy for two to three people and standing up in a tent is a nice thing. 2. Bathtub floor comes up high enough that in windy conditions, dust doesn't blow in from under the rain fly. 3. Really easy to set up with two people. 4. Mesh at the roof is fine enough to easily see stars through. 5. Big doors. Cons: 1. Rainfly is VERY incomplete without the (extra cost) vestibule or garage. Rain NEVER falls straight down and it WILL come in through the doors of the tent anytime the zippers are not fully closed and wrapped up in the velcro flap at the bottom of the entrance, which is impossible to do from the outside. So take the chance and zip the door closed at the top of the door. Less water comes in this way but the "beak drip" gets blown in through the zipper. We'll buy the vestibule for the next outing. 2.Not crazy about the poles and their pre-bent shape. This is what I mean by that; the sturdiness in the poles prevents them from flexing as easily as the carbon fiber types (duh). So extreme care needs to be taken to ensure that the pole is precisely in the "tent sleeve" where you want it before you flex the poles into their upright position. My concern/fear is that the pole will bend/crimp and render it useless (1 pole repair part/aluminum sleeve is included), it feels like it would be easy to do. These are minor things: 3.Footprint doesn't really fit. If you do a taut pitch on the tent, the footprint will be saggy along all sides and at all 4 corners leading to debris and water getting under the edges of your tent. Our solution was to stake out the footprint separately from the tent itself but had the footprint actually matched the footprint of the tent... this would be a non issue. 4. Zippers on the door. I would suggest, as we did, to customize the pulls on the zippers on the main entrance. I extended the main door pulls and wrapped them in an electric, neon, blinding color duct tape. That way the screen panel zipper didn't get pulled when you want the whole door to open. Five stars would require rain fly with vestibule and a footprint that fits. We'll keep this tent and use it for many years to come and I think it should last as it seems to be sewn together well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great tent for car camping! Although some say it is heavy it is not a mountaineering tent it is a spacious car camping recreational vacation tent. What makes it heavy is the center painted steel pole and the chromed steel stakes. The painted steel center pole could have been lightened up but I LOVE the steel stakes. How many time do you bend an aluminum stake trying to drive it into rock hard soil. I really like that it is tall. It has lots of ventilation screening which was important this summer. I really like the usefulness of the garage too. It gives you a nice place to sit out of the sun or rain and still have a dry entrance to the tent. The tent door will open completely and store out of the way above or open left or right depending on tents inside set-up. It can be set-up without the fly if the weather is right to give a very airy open feeling. Or use the fly for rain/wind protection and a bit more privacy. I like the color coded corner tabs. It makes it easy to set-up and since the garage opens in one direction for the awning to work it is good to know which end is which. I only wish they included lightweight aluminum poles for the awning. I needed to spend another $12 for poles to open the door as an awning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Car Camping/Family Tent! This is a great tent, best larger tent I have ever owned. The first time I set it up, my friends were making fun on my fancy expensive tent, until the first storm hit. :) We were camping in a canyon and had a severe thunderstorm with high winds come through and the tent stayed strong. Everyone else's tent's were badly leaning in the wind, and rain and wind were getting under their rain flys, but not my "fancy tent"! It is not hard to set up, a second person makes it way easier, but it is doable by yourself. I have the attached garage and it is great for family camping with enough room for my wife and I, the dog, and our son.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from completely waterproof My wife and I decided to buy a bigger tent this year since our 100 pound golden retriever husky mix goes everywhere with us. First time we used the tent we literally got caught in a torrential downpour. And a tornado was even spotted a few miles away the tent stayed 100% dry. Also held up to the high winds very well. I highly recommend this tent to anyone shopping for a new one. Thanks REI!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does the Job, but... Used this tent for 21 days rafting through the Grand Canyon. Worked well in rain, easy to set up, roomy enough. Tight fit with two cots inside. Despite being staked out and secured to logs in heavy wind at night it sounded like the poles were on the verge of breaking so I collapsed the tent on top of us to prevent pole breakage. My main gripe is the mesh venting along the bottom of the sidewalls. In a moderate wind the sand and dust blows into the tent through those low vents. Rain fly does not prevent the sand from blowing in. Without the rainfly people walking by can look in through those low mesh vents and see you sleeping.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 2011 improves on a very good tent I've used the Hobitat 4 for family car camping for a few years now. It's hasn't been the largest, sturdiest, or easiest to set up, but it's quite good on all those counts. The 2011 version improves the tent in a few key ways: It's much easier to set up with one person, as there are three poles (reduced from four clumsily-placed poles before). The general design seems simpler and sturdier, although I've only done a test setup in my yard so far. The rain fly covers more of the tent and is much easier to put on. And the color-coding on the ground cloth and the tent itself has changed from the diagonal-sides coding to a more sensible orange-tabs-are-in-front, black-tabs-are-the-rear. I recommend this to any casual car campers who want a roomy but not luxurious (and heavier) three-season tent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for a single female camper! I've gotta say, I LOVE this tent. I went camping with a bunch of friends. Everyone had cheap, flimsy, tents. Or they had the instant tents. I was able to put my tent up just as fast as the instant tent, yet it looks better, will last longer, and is better made. Everyone at the camp site now wants my tent. I was grateful that I was able to stand up in the tent and get dressed. However, for the ladies out there, be careful who is around... because there is mesh siding approx five inches wide on the wall, its the perfect height for people to see your rear as you change. However, dont let that stop you from buying a great tent. I love the fact that the door can turn into two, depending on how you set up the zippers. Very versatile.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from stitching started to breakdown The tent was easy enough to set up however after one use some of the fabric and pole harness' stichting were already starting to pull away from the material.
