Quality all around. From the resistant fabric to the many adjustable, durable straps, I've been consistently impressed. The convenience created by the TRIPLE access into the main compartment is definitely a highlight, and a feature I cannot imagine having traveled without! The pack is the perfect size for me; big enough to carry all the essentials and plenty of changes of clothing for several weeks of travel, while small enough to prevent the temptation of overloading myself with excess weight. Fully loaded to the max (about 10kg/20+lbs), it's a comfortable weight for me to haul around without things getting ridiculous. And I've successfully flown with it as my carry-on without any problems (even on RyanAir), which is a major bonus. On smaller, weekend outings, it compresses nicely without looking awkward.
Additionally, as a 20-something girl bouncing between hostels and trains and in constant company of all kinds of colorful souls, I appreciated the secure design of all of the zippers pulls. Most of the zippers can be inconspicuously tucked away beneath the pack's other flaps and parts, deterring any potential sticky fingers of passersby. There's so many compartments and secure pockets, and I always felt that my important documents and cards were nestled safely away without being annoyingly inaccessible. The pack overall is very sleek and often looks smaller than it is.
I debated about laying down so much dough for a pack, but I have been SO happy with this purchase and have had absolutely zero regret. I'll be using this pack for trips, big and small, for many years to come!

Rated5out of5bybusy bee grandmafromUnbelievable comfortBought this new pack to take hiking in the Swiss Alps for 2+ weeks. Went into REI in Saratoga, CA with another pack in mind. Jeremy (employee) had me try several packs on and by the time we were done, this was the pack. Jeremy is a pro at fitting and doesn't mess around. This pack did the job from the first time on. We did day hikes, hiked in all sorts of weather, did some overnights in mountain huts, etc. and I always had enough room for everything I needed and it was COMFORTABLE!

Rated5out of5byconilovingfromGreat backpack - perfect size for meI have been looking for a pack that I can use primarily for day hikes, but not something that I will "jam" pack. I have the Gregory 25 and it was just not quite big enough. With the 38 (this one), I can load what I need and everything is fairly easy to get to. I have mostly used this pack 'around town' (so to speak), so have not tested it on the trail yet, but it has worked well as I have intentionally carried all my 'gear' as if going on a hike.

Rated5out of5byolypengalfromLove itLove this pack, and my other larger Gregory as well. Fantastic design, super comfortable, works well for day hikes (I like to make sure I am equipped with backup gear in case the Washington weather shifts on me), rain fly is included, nice pockets and zippers for packing and unpacking and works great for overnight travel (not necessarily camping). It also looks good which I value (probably too much). I also really like the pocket on the bottom.. I can put items that I don't want touching other items, like an extra pair of shoes.

Rated5out of5bySarah the archaeologistfromGreat all around packI have used this pack so far for day hikes, travel, and a weekend backpacking trip. For day hikes, unless you are carrying extra gear it is quite large. However, the straps allow you to compress the pack down so it isn't uncomfortable and doesn't look ridiculous. I used this bag as a carry on bag for a long flight and it was comfortable to wear around the airport and even fit under the airline seat well. For a weekend backpacking trip, it is the perfect size. The sleeping bag compartment is a bit small for my older synthetic bag, but it doubles as a nice place to store a jacket for easy access. Even with around 30 lbs (lots of water), the pack is comfortable and well balanced.
I was a bit hesitant to purchase this pack because it is quite large for a daypack, but I have found the capacity to be very versatile. The straps are comfortable, it is easy to fit with the many adjustments, and the airflow is great on your back. My only minor complaints are that the side mesh pockets are a bit small to hold a liter bottle when the pack is full (they fit but barely), and you have to unfasten the compression straps to open the front access zipper.
So far even though I have used it for many trips, the pack still looks brand new. It is very durable but relatively lightweight. This pack is not inexpensive, but it is a quality item that I anticipate will see years of use. I adore my other Gregory pack, a 10 year old Shasta, as much as the day I bought it. It is still going strong with only minor wear visible and I have no intention of replacing that item anytime soon.
A well designed comfortable pack that is built to last!
