Rated5out of5byscgracefromPerfect backpackwe bought 2 of these backpacks for a recent trip to Africa and were very pleased with how they worked for us. Many pockets and compartments - held all we needed and then some and very comfortable to wear - I was hauling 20lbs at one point in it and it was easy to do!. Very glad we got these and they will get some good use from us!. Also REI was most helpful when purchasing and can't say enough good things about them!.

Rated4out of5byabwezfromworth the moneyOverall i started looking for a good backpack for a laptop that i had just got. wanted something that could fit my 15.6 inch laptop without being tight and that offered enough room to travel with the charger, change of cloths, phone, food ect. couldn't find a good quality bag till i came across this and the only thing that held me back was the price. i gotta tell you though it was well worth it. its a bit big but overall it holds everything i can through in it and more. good quality from what i can tell and when there is some good weight in it, it carry's very comfortable.

Rated3out of5byGolfherfromThe Good, The Bad and The UglyI packed this bag for a 3 week trip to Africa. Some camera gear, small laptop, Kindle, 3-1-1 bag, change of shirt and undies, small office needs...it was heavy, as I expected it would be. It was about 30 pounds at the worst of days.
This was my carryon...what I needed and what was valuable. I checked my clothes and things less valuable.
The straps were an immediate problem. The suspension system was zip...barely does anything at the hips to help spread the load. The shoulder straps did not fit right when all was said and done and the chest strap was built for a midget.
There was no way to contain all the straps on this thing to get it through the security rollers and it would catch and get stuck; straps all over the airplane floor and raking in and out of the overhead.
When packed...and not expanded, the bag barely fits in the overhead or under your seat in front of you.
When you get it loaded, the front compartment becomes totally worthless as you can't get into it or dig around...there are so many pockets and places to go that you can't find what you are looking for and have to unload it it to dig around.
The bottom compartment is neat. I liked putting some things there to be handy but out of the way...you just HAVE to make sure you put a little clip or lock on it or the thing will open up on you potentially and poof...there goes that stuff.
Bottom line was after 3 weeks I never wanted to see that bag ever again. REI is great and taking it back and I've gotten the Osprey Farpoint 40 which I should have gotten in the first place. Osprey was what I saw all over the backs of Africa trekkers.
If you want a good bag for short hauls and more office than hill top...then consider this bag. But if you want to go on a trip and not start getting worked up over your luggage...then buy a different bag.

Rated5out of5byBerbamacfromclose to perfectionThis pack is a phenomenal leap forward for comfort and packing in travel features. For everyday its awesome to be able to pack "everything but the kitchen sink"
However it is heavy...as well,it could be easier to pack. I would prefer a clamshell design. I know it would add even more weight. But this is the thing that make it a perfect pack!!!
I am a pack-junkie. With a pack for every use:) This one is as close to perfect as they get. I couldn't be happier.Well,it could be a scad cheaper:)
Excellent job on the collaboration between North face and REI...maybe we'll see more in the future!!!

Rated5out of5bycoach_rfromGreat travel packI bought this pack for travel. I can't believe how much it holds. It's easy to pack and find things. The laptop compartment makes going through TSA at the airport much easier.

Rated4out of5byolsonb09fromgreat for commuting to collegeUse for commuting to college. Holds books, change of clothes easily. Lots of space. Don't recommend using for hiking/camping. Could use compression straps but wouldn't change anything else.

Rated5out of5bycycle_nutfromThis is the Laptop pack I have wantedThe North Face Overhaul 40 Laptop Pack is the finest commuter-style backpack I have owned. I live out of my backpack and carry lots of gear so that I can be prepared for any eventuality. This pack has it all. A very large main compartment, with an ingenious inner pouch accessed via the bottom. It has many smaller pockets with lots of storage spaces and nooks and crannies. The quality of the zippers is better than I've ever seen before, and the material it is made of is very tough. The pack is a heavy-duty, built-for-endurance piece of gear. I especially like that the shoulder straps and belt can be stored out-of-site when needed. To those in the other reviews who complain about it not being good for hiking, I say "This is a very specialized pack, get a hiking pack!"
