This box is a much better construction than the equivalent cargo box for Thule but the installation process does not allow for a fairing to cut down on wind noise. Wind noise isn't terrible but would have been nice to have the option. Install on the Thule was a little easier but the construction of the box outweighs the slight difference.

Pros:
1) Light enough for one person to load onto car. You must think of it as a canoe. You need to handle it as such to get it up on the car. Turn it upside down, grab the near edge at the middle balance point, roll the near edge up to your waist, grab the far edge, roll it onto your knees, flip it up over you head, rest it on your head (unlike a canoe that rests on your shoulders), bend knees slightly, quickly straighten knees and "toss" onto car.
2) Opens from both sides.
3) Very neat adjustable clamps to fasten the skybox to the car. That makes it very easy to attach it to the car.
3) Roomy.
Cons:
The side latches/hinges don't always completely re-grasp/lock. You must make sure that all 3 grasper/hinges are closed. For example, open box from the right side then close it. Now open it from the left side and close it. If the right side hinges are not completely locked close, then as you shut the left side, the right side will pop open. Then the top goes catty wonpus. It takes two people somewhat easily or one person trickerly to get one hinge closed and locked before closing and locking the second hinge. The locking mechanism where the key goes needs to close with a "snap" to ensure total closure and locking.
3) The back of the skybox interferes with tail gate of my Subaru Outback. The skybox has very nice adjustable clamps to attach the box to luggage racks on the car. But, the slit that allows for the adjustability of the clamps does not allow the box to go forward enough to allow full opening of the tail gate. That causes two problems, 1) that makes it hard to get into the back of the car, 2) the tailgate will hit the box and maybe at sometime will break the lip of the skybox.

We end up needing additional load space for the occasional trip and this fit the bill. Sure, probably bigger than we need, but what the heck!
Be careful when loosening some parts as we lost use of one of the clamps for our first trip. Thankfully Yakima overnighted the needed parts for which we are eternally grateful!

Snow gear and sorts that I want to keep out side of my SUV. Not much difference with the gas consumption. Maybe 1mpg difference. Paid [$] for this large modle. Very pleased for the amount I paid.

We have a Tahoe and we started out with the Yakima 16s Skybox also bought from REI. After mounting it on top of our vehicle and filling it up pretty good with 3 sets of skis and additional gear I decided the extra room of the 18 would be nice and still not too large for the vehicle. After using the 18 for a while I am very happy we went with the larger size. It has allowed us to keep everything from skis, snowshoes, suitcases, etc. out of the passenger compartment of the vehicle and still have room to spare inside the box. The skybox was simple to install by just my wife and I in the parking lot of REI and it fit securely on the stock cross bars. The construction of the box is great and the lock and handle have worked perfectly. The box is wide enough I am able to mount it centered on the roof rather than to one side and with the ability to open it from either side it works wonderfully. Fuel mileage has remained the same and there is definitely more area to catch the wind (especially from the side) which can be felt a little while driving but nothing to worry about or make me wish I did not have the box.

Have a 2012 VW Jetta TDI with 15.5 ft^3 of trunk space. SkyBox was awesome and essential for cross-country driving, so glad we bought it. It has also made trips to the mountain a snap as all of the boots, gear, and snowboards fit in perfectly.

The Skybox is very useful for snowboarding and recreational stuff. The bigger the box the more you can put into it. It is relatively stable yet durable. It is very easy to install. The first time adjusting it takes about 30 mins, but after you have it adjusted just 2 mins to take off. and 2 mins to put on. I used the box with the Yakima Q-Tower system. Much better than getting a hitch platform and having to worry about stuff getting stolen off of it. I recommend buying the Skybox it is without a doubt a spacesaver and great recreational product.
