    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Rated5out of5byfromSaved a Life!To start off, my family has owned a skybox 16 for years. We have taken the thing on our road trips and ski trips for about 5 years now. That alone is an achievement in itself, because my family has put that skybox through some pretty hard conditions. Whether it be loading it to the gills or even accidently driving it under a parking structure's concrete crossbeam. The skybox has taken the abuse with no cracks or major structural damage. That being said I decided to buy one, a skybox 18, once I went off to college. This is my second year at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I get my fair share of ski trips in every year. A week ago I allowed my friend to borrow my skybox for a weekend ski trip. Unluckily, my friend ended up hitting a weak spot on Georgetown Lake. The car ended up going down, engine first, into the freezing lake with intense speed. However, once the engine sunk low enough for the nose of the rack to touch the ice, the car stopped sinking. The rack was holding the car up above the ice level, giving my friend plenty of time to get out of the car safely. Once the tow trucks came to pull the car out of the lake, the process to pull the car out was to roll it over multiple times to get it over the ice barrier. On the first roll, the rack popped off; after pulling it to shore I saw that the clips hadn't broken, but they actually held on so strongly that they ripped the roof rack off of the car. Sadly from being rolled, the box itself couldn't support the weight of the car so the top was severely cracked; however, the clamps still worked perfectly, easily releasing and re-locking into place. I want to commend the Yakima Company for making an amazing product that was built with care and quality. If not for this well designed product, I would not have a great storage container, but I also would not have a good friend with me today.

Rated5out of5byfromExactly what I neededJust used this on a trip from Indianapolis to Minneapolis with a few side trips to destinations in Wisconsin and Iowa, 1700 miles total. Used the box on top of my wife's Chevy Traverse with factory cross rails. Two adults and 2 children and with the 3rd row of the Traverse up, there is very little space for much luggage/gear. Enter the desire for a rooftop carrier... The box was easy to lift on and off the vehicle by myself and installs very easily (have a larger truck with a shell and yakima bars on it and it was easy to lift the box up onto it myself and install there as well). Like the fact that it opens from either side and it swallows a lot of gear. We were able to carry all our luggage and miscellaneous gear in the box with room to spare. Kept a small cooler with snacks, diaper bag, and a backpack with books and entertainment behind the 3rd row. Very easy for the kids to get in and out of the vehicle as these things were usually piled all around the floor of the vehicle before we had the box. We hit a couple of severe storms with downpours and poor visibility - everything in the box stayed dry. Did not notice a big drop in gas mileage either. Some added wind noise, but that was to be expected. Originally bought a smaller box. Once I got it home, I realized the Traverse could handle a larger box. REI accepted the return of the smaller box without any issues and let me take the larger Yakima out to the vehicle to test the fit first. Service was great. Love the box.

Rated4out of5byfromWindnoiseThis box is a much better construction than the equivalent cargo box for Thule but the installation process does not allow for a fairing to cut down on wind noise. Wind noise isn't terrible but would have been nice to have the option. Install on the Thule was a little easier but the construction of the box outweighs the slight difference.

Rated4out of5byfromSkybox 18Pros: 1) Light enough for one person to load onto car. You must think of it as a canoe. You need to handle it as such to get it up on the car. Turn it upside down, grab the near edge at the middle balance point, roll the near edge up to your waist, grab the far edge, roll it onto your knees, flip it up over you head, rest it on your head (unlike a canoe that rests on your shoulders), bend knees slightly, quickly straighten knees and "toss" onto car. 2) Opens from both sides. 3) Very neat adjustable clamps to fasten the skybox to the car. That makes it very easy to attach it to the car. 3) Roomy. Cons: The side latches/hinges don't always completely re-grasp/lock. You must make sure that all 3 grasper/hinges are closed. For example, open box from the right side then close it. Now open it from the left side and close it. If the right side hinges are not completely locked close, then as you shut the left side, the right side will pop open. Then the top goes catty wonpus. It takes two people somewhat easily or one person trickerly to get one hinge closed and locked before closing and locking the second hinge. The locking mechanism where the key goes needs to close with a "snap" to ensure total closure and locking. 3) The back of the skybox interferes with tail gate of my Subaru Outback. The skybox has very nice adjustable clamps to attach the box to luggage racks on the car. But, the slit that allows for the adjustability of the clamps does not allow the box to go forward enough to allow full opening of the tail gate. That causes two problems, 1) that makes it hard to get into the back of the car, 2) the tailgate will hit the box and maybe at sometime will break the lip of the skybox.
