The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.
Rated4out of5byMac the RoamerfromVery awsomeI used the carrier on top of a 2013 Subaru Outback on a 2,000 mile trip from Florida to Illinois on December. First install was at the store. Very awkward. Second install was on a short test trip to the beach. Third install was on the beggining of the trip. Fourth install while in Illinois. All installs got easier, but still tricky. Construction is great, very estable, very roomy very quiet. Of course gas mileage suffered, but what carrier won't do that? Don't expect to just put something on your roof and get 30 mpg. It won't happen. Contents in the carrier were always dry, even though on the way back it iced up and then thawed. It's hanging in from the ceiling in my garage waiting for another trip. Highly recommend.

Rated4out of5byDavidG SJfromFits my 2014 ForesterWe bought this for vacations. It fits just right on our 2014 Forester without hitting the rear antenna. We rode around with it to make sure it is stable; we will use for vacation soon.
We will give 5th star after we drive with it loaded and after several 100's of miles.

Rated5out of5byN2CLIMBfromGreat productI recently bought this box for my 2013 Impreza Sport 5-Door. I have been a truck guy my whole life but wanted better MPG. My biggest concern was places for my gear. The SkyBox 16s certainly solved that.
I was going to get a Thule but these were on sale. I am glad now because the Thule either makes one shorter than this or a fair amount longer; I didn't want either. This box is the length of my roof and does not look awkward. The advantage now is I can fit snowboards long enough for powder and decent length skis. The primary use is for transporting camping and climbing gear.
The box is easy to install though some might need a hand due to size and weight. It is stable, opens/closes easily, and doesn't seem to make a lot of noise. I think if it is windy all cars are noisy.
Performance wise I definitely lose a lot of MPG second to the extra weight on my car and loss of aerodynamics. From LA to Bishop my MPG went down to 27 MPG from 32/33 (it is mostly up hill all the way) and I was closer to 30 back. Still a lot better than the 15 MPG in my 2005 GMC but not what I was hoping. It is understandable though, so I am not totally displeased.
Just an idea of what you can fit in there: Two 55 liter packs stuffed with a couple trad racks, triple set of draws, three harnesses, three ropes, two helmets, two TV dinner tables, three sleeping bags, two compact chairs, two sleeping pads (large ones), 4 season Nemo tent, one gallon can of white fuel, some guide books, dog bed/dog food for a week, and a couple other random things.

Rated5out of5byWillow by the CreekfromGet the big one!Great cargo box. Have it on our Subaru Outback and it fits well, is easy to use, and holds a ton of stuff. I thought I wanted something smaller but I'm glad I got this one...the long length makes it more versatile and able to carry skis or snowboards or paddles. Went sledding last weekend and it was awesome be be able to toss the snow-covered sleds into the top without dealing with melting snow all over our car. We have three kids and camping wouldn't be possible without this awesome box. Feels sturdy and secure and it will be on our car for years to come.

Rated4out of5bybjmbjmfromNeed more space for my dogs.I travel back and forth from St. Louis, MO to Phoenix, Az a lot. My Honda CRV is limited in space for my dogs. I wanted a durable place to put luggage and other gear. So In one afternoon I researched all cartop carriers and decided on the Yakima Skybox 16s. I had to get the rails from a Honda dealer and put them on. Then off to REI for help on a carrier. Sales rep knew his stuff and recommended The Yakima 16s. It was bigger than I wanted but I am so glad he talked me into it. Putting it up was a breeze BUT the back hit my antenna. I use my satellite radio all the time so that was an issue. Seems the antenna bends so I made it work. 1500 miles later and the skybox was pretty good. No wind noise but lots of buffeting due to the angle of my roof. I opened the skyroof to keep track of it. The nose moved quite a bit in the wind storms on the way, but held secure! I was impressed and pleased on how well it performed.

Rated4out of5byCarl ZintelfromThe competition can learn from YakimaMy wife and I purchased another manufacturers roof box for our 2012 Subaru Outback from REI. We experienced a lot of very bothersome whistling from that box - full or empty, moved the position further forward and as far back on the racks as possible, all to no avail. I spoke with technicians from the other box maker and was told that any roof box put on an Outback will whistle and make noise. We returned that box and purchased the Yakima skybox 16. REI's customer service is second to none.
We then travelled 6,000 miles (9700 kms) west to northern British Columbia to return our daughter (and tree planting equipment) back to Ontario.
The box was more than I expected! Although we experienced a very few and brief episodes of whistling, I determined it was caused by a particular cross tail wind. Otherwise you wouldn't know the box was on the roof. The peened finish looks great - bug splats and other dirt is not as noticeable as a gloss finish. In comparison to the 'other one' the lock mechanism is far superior, there are lash down grommets inside for bungi cords or a cargo net, and it holds 3 cubic feet more cargo. In fairness to the other box manufacturer, I shared these comments and observations with their technical staff. They were appreciative of the feedback.
I recommend the Yakima Skybox.

Rated5out of5bythecapaglisfromExtra Space Needed!I bought a 2 door 2012 Golf and soon after, found out that we were expecting our first child. With not enough room, this was the best option for us. We use this for camping and general use. There is enough space to put luggage, our REI Hobitat 6 tent + accessories, folding chairs and a bunch of other stuff. It is easy to access and use; as well as being a perfect fit for the car. No issues with opening the hatch and with more than enough room to spare. This is my third roof box and I am finally happy with the selection I have made!
