I bought a Honda CRV to pack my camping and whitewater kayaking gear in (Inflatable kayak). I could easilly get all my gear in the back of the car. The problem was after meeting up with my river rat friends we need to load up in one car and run shuttle between take out and put in. I didn't have the room for a couple extra people and their boating gear along with my camping gear.
The Sky Box holds all my camping gear less my cooler. That is awesome.
Last weekend I had my boating gear and two of my friends along with their whitewater gear in the back of that little car thanks to the Sky Box holding all my camping gear.
I couldn't be happier with how the box works. It opens on either side which I didn't expect. It holds much more than I thought it would and I didn't notice a drop in milage either.
It's a nice product, I'm very pleased.

Great cargo box that has a lot of storage room! I drive a 2011 Acura MDX and the box fits perfectly and doesn't impede the hatch from opening or interfere with the satellite radio. The box easily stores several pairs of skis and boots with room to spare. It will make long trips much better by freeing up space inside the cabin of the MDX. My only complaint is the lockdown clips which are plastic and seem fragile. I'm convinced these will break at some point, but so far so good.

We take our family up skiing often with the Yakima and it works great. We have room for guests now when that happens too! Hardly even know it is on the car when not in use. Fits our Honda Pilot great! Be carful about ski length as my 183's are the max length. Washing car is more of a challenge, and snow melting off gear does pool in the bottom for a day, but otherwise a great, well made box! We keep it open over night after skiing to let water dry, and this means keys must be kept in the lock all night (not possible if you are street parking). You could just as easily wipe it up with a towel though. Opening on both sides is nice, but not something average person would use a lot since you tend to put this on one side of the car racks so it is easier to reach in/out.

Just the right size for an E90 3-series BMW. Not too long, not too wide, not too tall. Looks great and holds gobs of stuff. Adds station wagon cargo to my sedan. MPG dropped by about 2 as expected. Stupid easy to install.
If you have to have the smooth finish (as opposed to textured) a net and cargo pad then feel free to pay the extra $130, but really they aren't needed. You can find that stuff elsewhere for cheap anyways.
The handle is a little goofy to get closed correctly and the sole reason for a 4-star rating. I might just need to practice more.

Service and delivery comments:

I had to wait because the box was backordered but REI kept me informed the entire time. I actually ordered it over the phone because I could not find one in stock. The rep was very helpful and knowledgeble and she made sure I was able to take advantage of REI's sale at the time.
Once it showed up at the store and I picked it up the delivery guy unpacked it for me, helped install it and got rid of the huge cardboard box that it came in.
A true example of stellar customer service from beginning to end in a world that seems to display less and less of it.

I love this box! Holds all the extra gear and is huge but looks good on both my vehicles. The mounting system is great. I set it for my 2012 Outback and then adjusted the factory cross bars on my 04 Explorer. It take less then 10 minutes to switch from one to the other. All its really missing is a mount inside for snow boards but nothing a couple bungees can't fix.

The SkyBox is very well made. It is rigid wehn closed and all the components are nice and beefy. The latch works very well and hinges can take a lot of abuse. There is tons of room and being able to poen it from both sides is a huge bonus. It seems very aerodynamic too. Driving with it on doesn't seem to affect gas mileage much at all, even at interstae speeds. It is also very quiet. No hums or whistles while driving - very important when you have a sunroof. The only complaint I have is it's heavy and bulky, but that's a tradeoff for it's size. If Yakima added some convenient external handling points it would help, otherwise count on having your significant other or hiking partner on hand to muscle it up onto the roof rack.

I use this on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was not very easy to install by myself, definiately use a helper. There is a lot of storage in this unit. It is up kind of high on the Grand Cherokee, but I am ok with that. I store the things so its not a big deal. It has come in very handy going on trips with the new little one.

This is a great product. The hinge design and ability to open it from both sides makes loading and unloading a breeze. The quick release style mounting brackets make it very easy to mount onto the roof rack of my Honda pilot with factory cross bars. I have removed the box on my own but mounting it is much easier with 2 people. During our first trip with this box, traveling at highway speeds, we ran into about 70 miles of pouring rain. From what I could tell, not a drop of water got into the box. I also assumed that having such a large object on the top of the car would create lots of wind noise but I could barely tell it was there.
The only complaint I have and it is minor, is that I cannot adjust this forward enough so that it does not interfere with the tail gate lifting up. On the pilot the small washer fluid port on the rear glass hits the edge of the box when it is closed.
Overall this is a great product and well worth the money.
