Comments about Novara Ponderosa 24'' Bike - 2012:
This is the best bike you can buy your kid. It has an awesome suspension fork, so your kid can do dirt jumps and ride hard trails. The Geometry is spot-on, so your kid can have a nice stable ride. I have had this bike since I was 9, and I'm 13 now. I still use it, though, and i can still rock the trails and the jumps with it.

Comments about Novara Ponderosa 24'' Bike - 2012:
I had been looking for a mountain bike for my 8 year old so he can start doing some trail rides with me. Options in the market for a 24" (wheels) bike are pretty limited and HEAVY. So limited that I almost bought and X-Small 26" frame to build up with 24" wheels. Fortunately for me I was browsing at REI and saw one of these on the floor. I picked it up and was surprised at how light it was compared to all the other 24" bikes I had checked out (all major brands). It also has a triple on the front so there is lots of gear range. Combine that with the lightness of the bike and kids can ride up the hills not push their bike.
Anyways, I figured I'd save myself some time and just buy it. He's been riding it for a month now and we're both very happy. I can't comment on long term durability, but everything is working perfectly so far. Grip shifting works well. I also pulled the stock brakes (though they seemed fine) and put a set of Avid Juicy disc brakes I had laying around on. Yes, you heard correctly...a kids bike designed to take disc brakes! (I was impressed anyways!) The suspension fork isn't anything to write home about, but my son is 60 pounds so he doesn't need anything beefier just yet, and it is better than a rigid fork for what we're doing.
A little more on durability...my son set up a bunch of jumps and has been launching the thing off of them non-stop since he got it. He's had some pretty good crashes too (bushes, pavement, a small tree) and everything is still working great. One casulty was a reflector on the pedal, but all the stuff that matters is holding strong.
This is a legimiate (kid's) trail bike and I would definitely recommend it to others. I didn't rate it perfect because it's too soon to tell, but from what I've seen it's the best 24" option out there right now.

Comments about Novara Ponderosa 24'' Bike - 2012:
I looked at a lot of mountain bikes for my son who is eight. He rides to school each day and also goes on some trails with his dad. This bike is a legitimate trail bike and will allow your child to climb like never before. The key here is how light this bike is. This bike weights about 25.5 #s and believe me this is light for a kids bike. Most bikes you will see from good big name companies are about 4#s heavier, which is huge for a kids bike. No rear suspension is really not an issue and not worth the weight impact at this age.
You will not regret this purchase.

Comments about Novara Ponderosa 24'' Bike - 2012:
We own three 24" kids bikes (4 kids)and are always upgrading. I tried the Ponderosa because the Scott Scale JR and RC were unavailable--and find the Ponderosa to be an amazing value. The bike is the lightest carried by REI, actually weighs 25.5 w/o pedals, and has better components than many adult more-expensive bikes (e.g. Kenda Small Block 8 tires). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. (Note: We originally tried it because it was in the REI 20% off sale--but now would buy it again at full [$] price.
