Sawyer Complete Water Treatment System - 4 Liter is rated 4.4286 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal system for volume This system is ideal for filtering volume large hydration needs or for bigger groups. The liter/min filter rate is a bit inflated as others have said. It does take about 10-15 min for the full 4qt/1gal to filter. It is a bit bulky for a single person, but it's capability to accomodate small groups makes it negligable with gear distribution. The valve on the blue bag makes filling other containers/bladders quite easy. I wish the extra hose they provided to turn it into a hydration bladder would have come with a bite valve, but with my picky prefferences to them I probbably would have replaced it anyway. I purchased a SteriPEN FitsAll Filter from REI to keep sediment out of the gray bag and prevent clogging. Works like a champ. It fits so well into the gray bag opening you'd think it was manufactured just for it. Link for SteriPEN FitsAll Filter: http://www.rei.com/product/784450/steripen-fitsall-filter I recommend a small bailing bucket or plastic bottle with the top cut off to collect water and pour into the gray bag. Can be a bit cumbersome to try and dip the bladder into shallow water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding filter system! My friends and I just returned from 10 days floating the Dean River in the wilderness of British Columbia. We were dropped off and picked up by helicopter, so weight was an issue. The weather was hot and humid, and it became quickly apparent that maintaining hydration would be a top priority. This filter exceeded every expectation for producing water for the three of us. Every day, when setting up a new camp, we would assemble our filter station and immediately start producing water. Using a length of climbing webbing prussocked around a tree branch or tent pole, we would hang the filter bags. Then right next to it we would hang an REI collapsable bucket which would be used to fill the grey filter bag, and we would place a five-gallon collapsable water jug below the blue bag. Then it was a simple matter of keeping the grey bag full and emptying the blue bag. With the filler bucket hung from its own branch "cycling the water maker" as we called it took just a couple of minutes including the trip to the river, and one person could do the whole job. Throughput was excellent. Filling the 5-gallon jug took at most one hour. The only quibble I have with the whole system is rolling it up for transport. The bags don't nest or roll well, and are difficult to store in a safe and space-efficient manner. However, that is no reason not to buy this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effortless (nearly) filtering Used this on a multiday hike on the AT. Used for a group of 3 hikers to filter water. Kept up with our needs and is easy to use. The large capacity is great for groups and it is easy to fill in large or moving bodies of water. It is easy to use just fill up, connect hoses/filter and put bag higher then the other and let gravity do the rest. Works as advertised. Watch online video for an idea of how to use. only issue was with a small and slow flowing source of water the large bag could not be filled. Suggest prefiltering any dirty or muddy water before going in the bag to prevent dirt from going into filter and clogging it up. selected this due to it large capacity for our group and wanted no moving parts to break and no pumping. This product delivered on all accounts. Several people on the trail asked about it and were interested in it. One person was pumping water and we were discussing the no moving parts when their pump broke so the point was well taken. It sold itself. Thinking abut buying the smaller one just for myself. I highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome and Easy! This is my first review. As a nurse specializing in infectious disease, good water while hiking is very important to say the least. I wanted more than the 0.2 micron filtration that many other products provide. This one has it! This Sawyer system is so easy to use. It filters very quickly, although alittle longer than the specs state by a minute. However, you can set it up and go on to other things to do when setting up camp and then fresh water is ready for you! Thanks for a great product!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great filter but needs tinkering I agree with those who say this is an excellent filter: it definitely is. No doubt about that. This is my 3rd Sawyer filter and they all are highly recommendable. However, I must say that in this case I was a bit disappointed with the "suspension system", if you can call it that; it's a 10" strap with a D-ring on one end and a #2 plastic Nite Ize S-Biner on the other... That's it. And I don't mean one for each bag? Nope, that's the entire solution for hanging the complete system? (!) I really think that for the price the people at Sawyer could have dedicated a bit more time to designing a way to actually USE their great filters... I understand that most people like to tinker with their equipment, and they definitely won't be let down here, because saying that this filter is ready to use straight out of the box is simply not true. Tinkering is REQUIRED? Otherwise your two options are: A.- look for a branch that's exactly the right height (and we're talking 7' approx.) and either hang everything in a "daisy-chain", causing great stress on the connections and joints, or B.- to avoid the tension, only hang the "dirty" bag on a lower branch and leave the "clean" bag on the ground, but this makes the pouring part a hassle... As I said, relatively minor issues with easy fixes, but necessary fixes non-the-less.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very disappointed I bought two of the 4 Liter filter sets for a backpacking trek at Cross Timbers, Lake Texoma to use with 20 people. The water we filtered was relatively clean but not clear. Each 4 Liter bag took 10-20 minutes to filter, not the 3 minutes stated in the instruction manual. After 2-3 uses, we had to backflush the filters to get them working again. When I got home, I used the hose attachment to backflush both sets of filters until the water coming out was totally clear. Then I tried to filter tap water. One filter took 15 minutes for 4 liters; I stopped the second filter after 30 minutes and only 2 liters running through. I am very disappointed because I also have the Sawyer Squeeze filter which works great. I don't know if I got two bad sets, but I'm reluctant to take another chance when I go to Arkansas this summer for a 30 mile hike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter! I used this filter system in the BWCA last week to filter water for a group of 5. I tested it ahead of time and it performed as well in the field as it did in my kitchen. Filtered 4 liters in mere minutes with no effort. There was no discernible slowing of the filtering process over the course of our 4 day trip. I had previously owned a Katadyn Base Camp Filter which clogged after 2 days. The Sawyer is not as easy to fill but so much more reliable! I bought a Sea to Summit collapsible bucket to fill it with and that worked great. I do agree with a previous reviewer that you need extra bungee cords for hanging this system. I got a stuff sack to hold the filtering system, bucket, and bungees so it is ready to go. When I got home I back-flushed the filter until water was clear, followed the sanitization procedure and left it out to dry. So easy!
