The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Water Filter:
This filter did not work when I tried it in my kitchen. It did work if I disconnected the pre-filter, but it is designed to work with the pre-filter in place. When the pre-filter was on, I could not get any water to pump and the hose began to collapse from the suction I was creating. I double checked everything, backflushed it, re-read the instructions, etc. It was not too complicated and the fact that it pumped with ease when the pre-filter was not on indicated to me that the pre-filter may have been defective.
To state the obvious, test it before going into the field (as with any gear).
This is disappointing as I like the small size and others seem to be satisfied. I'm headed to return it tomorrow.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Water Filter:
When I first saw this filter I had to have it and purchased it immediately. I took it home and familiarized myself with how it works and the maintenance procedures. It actually became hard to pump right there at my kitchen sink and backflushing didn't help improve it much. I even tried a second filter, same thing.
And I'm not an idiot who can't understand or follow directions, this filter is just a piece of junk, period. I wish I had purchased at REI. This thing never even made it onto the trail!
Not only would I not recommend this to an friend, I won't even consider purchasing ANYTHING made by MSR since they think it is OK to keep selling stuff that does not work as advertised.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Water Filter:
Ive taken this filter on overnighters, day trips, and weeklong backpacking trips. It has failed me a couple of times with the backflushing, the usual complaint on this product. Upon inspection at home and several trial runs i realized that the backflushing problems are all mostly human error. It filters water fast although just slightly hard to pump (just barely hard actually.) A few tips though:
. Always Filter with the prefilter on no matter how clean the water looks.
. Attach the prefilter to a trekking pole or some heavy item to keep it from floating all over the place or rolling over and sucking air in.
. Setting it up for backflushing is a delicate matter, once you reverse the valves you have to be really careful not to have air in the chamber before you backflush if you draw even a tiny bit of air into you have reassemble it. It is a complicated procedure but once you get it right its easy gliding.

This water filtration device has saved me with providing clean, pure water to drink. I've never gotten sick from using this and it works every time. Can't ask for anything better.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Water Filter:
This filter has been great so far. I see a few people have complained about small parts that are easily lost, which is somewhat true considering I misplaced one of the two small check valves. However, I called MSR and they sent one in the mail to me free of charge. Doesnt get any better than that.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Water Filter:
When new, this filter was much lighter and much faster than my Katadyn Hiker. But after filtering roughly 10 liters, it clogged almost completely. Since then, it has adamantly refused to be backflushed.
I have watched the how-to-backflush video three times, I tried backflushing numerous times, both in the mountains and at home. When I try to backflush, the pump acts as though airlocked. It refuses to draw water into its outlet end and through the filter element.
I'm hoping there's simple solution and will contact the manufacturer and maybe exchange this unit in case it's defective, but I'm now so wary of malfunctions that I'm reluctant to bother taking this on a climbing trip.
If you buy this filter, I recommend you (1) practice backflushing at home several times before taking it into the back country, (2) back flush it BEFORE it clogs, (3) consider packing spare filters, and (4) pack a backup purification system such as Pota Aqua.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Water Filter:
I have a lot of respect for the bomb-proof durablity of MSR products. The Hyperflow is an unfortunate exception and should be recalled immediately to preserve the company's good reputation. I bought the Hyperflow to lower the weight of my pack for the John Muir Trail. I studied the manual and the Youtube videos and carefully backflushed the filter each day. But after just three days, the pump became almost impossible to push - but I was stuck with 13 days still to go before I got back to civilization. I have talked with many others who have had the same problem so I do not think this was a case of "user-error". I have always relied on MSR when I go to remote areas with harsh conditions. This time the company has let us down. They need to get this filter off the shelves until they can redesign it.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Water Filter:
This filter failed on its first real test. I could not, despite repeated attempts and consultations with the instructions, get it to backflow to clean the filter. Finally, the tightening mechanism on the filter flat-out broke, rendering it useless. It was a good thing this happened on the next to last day of the trip, when we were around other backpackers, and not deeper into the wilderness, where we would have been without a backup system (short of boiling our water). I cannot recommend this product, especially at [$]. It looks great, is small and handy, a little hard to pump but not too bad. But none of that matters if the thing is so fragile it breaks when you try to clean it. Had to return to REI--first time in 41 years of membership.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Water Filter:
I've used this filter on several trips to local So Cal mountains. San Gorgonio, Baldy, San Antonio, Whitney, Langley - it's done very well, pumped for multi-day trips for multiple people. I'd say in all I've probably pumped somewhere between 50-100 liters through this pump in the last couple years, and it's always performed great. But - if you're going to take this guy, make sure you either have a replacement filter handy or you bring some tablets. Because when it clogs, forget it. I think on this last trip we all came bag with bigger arms from forcing water through this thing - it's a workout. I backflushed it repeatedly, went through all the troubleshooting tips, nothing helped. I wish I had brought a replacement filter!
One tip for if this does happen - pump slow. It seems to offer a bit less resistance when clogged if you don't try to force it. But then it's really slow - figure a couple minutes to pump a liter.
All in all it's a great filter - but definitely make sure you're aware of the shortcoming going in, and be prepared.

Comments about MSR HyperFlow Water Filter:
I really tried to make this filter work. I really liked the low weight, bulk, and fast filtering speeds, but it just would not work for what I needed it for. This thing will clog VERY quickly on any water that comes from a glacier - even if it looks clear. I got less than a gallon out of it and it clogged. Backflushing was a complete hassle and failure. Back to the store. The second filter was used in a tarn in the Olympics. Not fed by glaciers. Filter fatally clogged on day one. Unable to backflush again (despite following instructions). Apparently just too clogged after a few liters of clear water. I have also heard from others that coastal streams, rich in tannic acid, and probably tiny organic material, too, will kill a hyperflow filter in one trip.
When it did work, it was the fastest filter I have ever seen or used. I just don't trust this thing.
