Katadyn Vario water filter has a 2-mode design that lets you opt between fast filtration or extended lifetime of the primary filter (up to 500 gallons!)

    • Vario features a 2-filter system; 1 is a 0.3-micron, pleated glassfiber filter used to remove waterborne bacteria and cysts
    • Secondary ceramic filter, engaged with a simple twist of the casing, is used to prefilter debris in dirty water away from primary filter
    • Keeping turbid water away from the primary filter effectively extends its usable life
    • Vario is also a high-output system, filtering up to 2 qt. per min. in "fast flow mode" (filtering clean water with ceramic filter disengaged)
    • In "longer life mode" (ceramic filter engaged), unit produces 1 qt. per min.
    • Replaceable carbon keeps water tasting fresh and reduces chemicals, toxins and odors through the life of the cartridge
    • Dual-piston technology minimizes the effort required to pump water through the system
    • Unit attaches directly to 63mm wide-mouth bottles (not included) for filling; output hose accommodates hydration systems and large containers
    • Katadyn Vario water filter includes prefilter, cleaning pad, lubricant and carry bag

Output and longevity specifications based on information provided by the manufacturer. Pleated filter comes with a prefilled carbon core. Both filter and carbon are independently replaceable. Carbon can be changed when the taste of water changes. (Carbon typically becomes ineffective after six months of use or approximately 200 liters.) Field cleanable ceramic prefilter should be replaced when completely worn.

Please note: Katadyn products can only be shipped to U.S. addresses.

Katadyn Vario Water Filteris rated3.4444out of5by9.
Rated5out of5byfromWorks Perfectly If You Read The InstructionsKatadyn provides everything needed to keep the Vario in perfect working order. If water comes out the side it's because flow is restricted and the ceramic filter is clogged. Fixing it is as simple as brushing the top of the ceramic filter with the included green pad. It takes 10 seconds. When your trip is finished, Katadyn recommends disassembling the unit, rinsing everything off, and letting it air dry. You then reassemble it using a small amount of the included silicone lubricant on the O Ring seals. I've used this filter in many situations, including at a remote hut in winter where the Vario successfully filtered water for sixteen people. I've used it in backpacking outings where it was the primary filter for a dozen people. The water tastes great and no one gets sick. The only possible drawback is that it is rather heavy at 533 grams. But it does such a great job and can service several people, so in my view is worth the extra weight.

Rated1out of5byfromLeaky, Leaky, LeakyThis filter leaks a lot. Seems to work well otherwise (e.g. fast flow, sturdy) but it's just completely impractical to use. It might be okay in warm weather if you don't mind water leaking everywhere, but even then it's hard to know if the water is being adequately filtered. In cold weather this simply cannot be used. I really wanted this filter to work because the flow rate is pretty high, but I took it back for a refund, and I'm probably going to stick with the tried and true Katadyn Hiker model.

Rated4out of5byfromGreat filterThe pump is great. It pumps water in both directions, so it fills your bottles quicker. I did have one issue with this filer: the intake connection on the filter came off and it is not fixable. Lucky for me, it was under the REI/manufacture warranty so REI replaced it for free. I still recommend this filter, just be careful where and how you pack it.

Rated4out of5byfromFollow Up to my 8-14-2013 reviewOK...FOLLOW-UP on 8-14-2013 review, in which I gave 4 stars. Still 4 stars. I was perplexed by the number of reviews complaining about water leaking and/or squirting out from between the head section and the body section of the unit. So when I encountered the exact same issue I had to look into it, and the answer was simple. The ceramic prefilter disc can and will get clogged should one use silty, murky or other dirty water. Katadyn's webpage has a pdf for maintenance of the Vario, wherein reads that really dirty water can and will clog up the ceramic prefilter disc in less than one gallon. It seems this is what people are missing. They read that the unit can filter super nasty, muddy, silty water...which is can, and does...but in doing so clogs up the prefilter. When this happens one needs to either clean the prefilter in the field or switch from "fast" to "slow" filtering. It's not the unit that's's people not knowing the limits of the unit, and being lazy and using foul water instead of taking the time to make a pool to get clear(er) water. Stop using really dirty water, if at all possible, and if one must - clean the prefilter with the green scrubber that comes with the unit. The ceramic prefilter disc can take up to 200 scrubbings before needing to be replaced. Use the cleanest water possible. Clean the prefilter if dirty water is used. Keep the various o-rings lubricated. Disassemble and completely air dry the unit before putting it into storage after a trip. Replace the activated carbon when there's an odor or taste in the water. It is a maintenance prone unit, but works great...and fast. This Katadyn Vario is a supurb water filter. With proper care, use and storage it will yield years of faithful service.

Rated4out of5byfromWORKS GREAT !THIS KATADYN VARIO WORKS GREAT !!! But has a few draw backs. I have used my Katadyn Vario extensively over the last 5 years filtering perhaps 200 gallons of water - which is no where near the 500 gallon capacity . Never a single problem. HOWEVER... I followed the instructions making sure that after each trip I completely removed/disassembled the head unit, removing/cleaning the ceramic filter disc, and fiber glass filter cartridge which also holds the carbon granuals - and cleaned all the componenets, air dried them, lubed the seals on the moving pump pistons, and reassembled. It's not "that" big of a deal, but none the less it does take up some time. I've used this Katadyn Vario on a few 2 week backpacking trips, without a single issue. But unlike some reviewers - I take the time to ensure if at all possible I'm not suctioning water from a silty source. Read the instructions, rather depending on one's supposed superior expereince and knowledge. The instructions read that silty and murky water "can" be used, but is not advised, and if used the "slow" setting must be used. I'm not sure if the other reviewers having the failure issues while using silty water selected the "slow" setting or not, and are just too embaressed to admit it or not. The double action pump pumps really fast with compariable ease. One can thread the body of the cartridge housing where the clean water discharge is, directly to a large mouth water bottle or hydration reservoir opening of similar size. Or a hose can be connected to the water discharge port and placed in other cantainers with smaller/larger openings. The unit is 15oz as opposed to some other units 4-6oz's lighter. For me, the speed in filtering water outwieghs this issue. It's also a tad bulkier than other units. Tearing the pump apart, cleaning, etc, and re-assembly is very easy, and doesn't require tools. I have no idea why another review commented that he had to use his Leatherman. One simply twists the pin holding the piston assembly on 1/4 turn and push it out. The head assemply then readily is disassembled, and the head unit unscrews from the body which contains the ceramic filter disc and cartridge. As for the leaking comment noted by another reviewer...this is why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 stars...and I may revist this review and edit my star rating. My unit has worked flawlessly for years, but... when I checked my gear for my last trip - including a tear down and reassemble of the head unit - the pump leaked, considerably! At the time I thought I damaged the o-ring seal while reassembly, and opted to piggy back on my backpacking partner's water filter instead of using mine. I'm about to gear check for another week long trip into Mineral King (Sequoia Nat. Park in Calif) and I will be looking into the leaking issue and get back with an edited review. Should the o-rings be fine as noted by others, and the leak continues/is caused by a cracked housing, or other fault of design...I will be back with a 2 or 3 star rating. BUT...for the time being...4 stars.

Rated4out of5byfromMmmm Mountain WaterIn Pike National Forest, I used this filter to fill up my bladder and my two Nalgene bottles. It's a little big compared to some lightweight stuff I've noticed but worth it for me to carry in my pack. The activated carbon helps clear up taste issues from stream water. For my first time out I took it with all the included contents. But now that I know what to expect I can keep some (not all) of the maintenance stuff at home and help reduce bulk a little. I especially like how it attaches to the Nalgene bottles and frees up a hand to pump. I can vouch that it removes dirt and sediment from water. After I got home I took it apart. The ceramic filter was dirty as well as the microfilter on the inside. Easy to clean with scrub pad that comes with it.

Rated5out of5byfromGreat piece of gear!We took our Vario water filter out with us the first time while car camping. We wanted to make sure all was good before hitting the trail with this little guy. Let me say this is our first lightweight pump water filter and I was quite impressed with the output and the quality. We didn't filter anything super dirty so we had it on the fast flow setting which bypasses the ceramic filter but it was still faster than I expected. We had a 32 ounce cup we used as our source reservoir and it took about 10 pumps to get all the way though it. It tasted clean and critter free as well. You can tell that quality was on their mind from the addition of a bottle clip, hose float to keep the input hose below the top and above the sediment and a separation zip bag to store your input hose as to not cross contaminate your clean supplies to the craftsmanship of the filer. You can also fill your bottle from a hose or screw directly on to the top of a Nalgene bottle, they thought of everything. We are very pleased and look forward to using this for years to come.

Rated1out of5byfromLeaks from the topI am on my second Vario. I took the first one back to REI after using it 3-4 times and it started leaking. I cleaned it, took it entirely apart, lubed it, and it still leaked on both longer life and faster flow settings. I got the second one and took it home and used it in the sink only to find it leaking again, brand new out of the box. Again, cleaned it and lubed it from top to bottom to no avail. I am going to take it back and get the MSR pump before my next trip, I am not risking contaminating my water. I will not buy anything Katadyn anymore.
