I bought the Daylite so that my wife and I would each have one with outside water bottle pockets. (I also have the earlier version, which does not have the water bottle pockets but which was designed to attach to my Osprey Crescent for use as a summit pack.)

We find the Daylite perfect for "adventure travel" such as on small boat cruises where one reaches shore via zodiacs. It is also handy in cities because it is relatively compact. It packs flat in a suitcase for travel or can be used as a carryon. It holds a sufficient amount for a half-day hike, including camera and rain gear. The straps are not cushy and after a full half-day one can feel definitely feel the effect of carrying a heavier weight, such as a DSLR with a zoom lens. Thicker straps or a true hip belt would compromise packability, however.

The Daylite is probably too small and lightweight for other than a minimalist day hike. It is also not waterproof, so if carrying cameras or other electronic gear you'll need to put them in a dry bag for "wet landings" or rainy weather.

I haven't tried this version with my Crescent so I can't comment on its use as a supplemental or summit pack for backpacking. Also, we haven't used a hydration bladder; we carry half-liter water bottles.

In sum the pack gets five stars for the ways we use it.

I purchased this pack on a whim during a recent sale and thought that it was a great value for the price. After getting home and reading the reviews here I had a good feeling that it was. Now after about six weeks of using it, I can say that it is.

For the past couple years I have been using a similar pack made by Kelty (the Big Basin) but with that bag I found that I had very little room to pack essentials, especially after inserting the water bladder, which took up a good portion of the main compartment. I also had issues with the straps being a bit too short, especially when skiing or wearing a heavier coat. So I was looking for a bag that had a separate bladder sleeve that was not in the main compartment and longer straps. This pretty much fits the bill.

First, for the price, the bag has good padding and capacity. Second, it is a good size. It is more like a small ruck sack instead of the hydration packs you see that are designed just to hold the water bladder. I like the netting on the outside and the cinch straps to tighten it down. I find that because the hydration bladder sits in a separate compartment that is right behind the padding I can fit more in the bag. Right now I can carry a light lunch, first aid kit, map, and rain coat.

I recommend using an Osprey/Nalgene brand reservoir (2L version). I own one and it slides in perfectly and provides a bit more support/rigidity for the pack.

Now the downsides. First, as one reviewer mentioned, the arm straps are just too short, especially for folks with a bigger frame. This is the only major flaw with the bag and the wrong place where Osprey cut costs. By having about 2-3" of more webbing length on each side the problem would be solved. My suggestion is that you try this on in the store and see if it works for you. For me it is a better fit than the Kelty, but I fear that it will be a bit short for skiing. The second problem is that even though the bladder sits in a separate sleeve, when the bladder is full it will press inwards on the main compartment taking up some of the room in there. It is much better than other designs, but is something to consider.

Other than those two minor shortcomings, it is a nice bag for the price.

I have used this pack several years, and can attest to its basic durability. I bought it as a daypack to stow inside my larger luggage when traveling overseas, since it sits quite flat when empty. Padded back panel is very comfortable, as are the shoulder straps. There's enough room in the main compartment for rain jacket, fleece, camera, etc.

I agree 100% with CKM from Singapore's comments, especially re: Side compression straps, which should have had clips; and the short length of shoulder straps at bottom - and I have a fairly thin chest & shoulders.

It comes to a rounded point at the bottom, so you'll never be able to stand it up against a wall - a minor complaint.

More than anything, the lack of organization drives me slighly mad. I always feel like I'm on a blind fishing expedition when digging around in either compartment for smaller items.

With these small changes, this would be one terrific travel daypack.

This is a very useful SMALL pack. If you don't want to haul everything around with you this pack will work great. It's a very nice bag. I did want to mention one function of the side cinch straps that hadn't been noted. They're very good as a security measure. I always move the zippers below the level of the side cinch straps and then cinch them down. With the zippers in this position some random person (read thief) can't open your pack, without first opening up the side cinch straps. On the trail this might not be an issue but walking around town it's a Great Feature. It might not be a top concern but it does happen. I've seen may people walking around oblivious to the fact that their packs are wide open or can easily be opened by an ill intended person. It's a nice ounce of prevention.

I found this by accident. I got the travel 65 and an REI person showed my what else I could do with my travel 65. I needed to downsize in what I bring when I travel. This day pack doesn't trigger TSA to inspect even thought it had many compartments and held a lot. I'm only 5 feet but it fit me perfectly and was comfortable to wear when it was fully packed.

I bought this to attach to an Osprey Porter 46 bag/backpack. The instructions for attaching it to the Porter are minimalist and unhelpful, but once I figured it out I decided it's sufficiently quick and easy for someone on the go. Capacity also seems limited and lacking in compartments. Eagle Creek does a much better design for this kind of thing. I ended up not using it for the intended travel, and returning it.

when I bought this I was looking for a simple pack but I was told that it wouldn't be a long term daypack because it was only made to be used for a short side hike here and there. That couldn't be farther from the truth. I'm extremly hard on my gear I don't try to but stuff happens. I have used it all over North Carolina, Alaska, Washington State and DC, Brittish Columbia, Mexico, Belize, The Bahamas and Jamaca for three years. It looks a little (or very) drity but some how still looks great. It does work great as an attachment to the Aether which I also have and love. Just a great and simple little backpack.
