by Trying To Be Tracelessfromtoo inaccurate for backpacking routesI hate taking things back to REI, it hurts us members. Nevertheless, I took this back. It is supposed to be accurate to within .25% (that's one-quarter percent, not 25%). I got it close to that on a 12" straight line, but on a typical switch-backing hiking route, it's useless. The wheel is too big to roll along accurately on the map, and you end up way off. A route that I know to be 18 miles came up as 12, that's not helpful info for planning a hike. So this thing might be good for planning driving routes, where being off by a few miles doesn't matter (but with the internet mapping services, why bother?) I wish it would work for hiking. If somebody could just come up with one where the measuring is done by a rolling ball like in a ballpoint pen, then you'd have something. Until then, take a pass. In fact, I recommend that REI drop this item.
