Comments about Sani-Fem Freshette Feminine Urinary Director:
I bought this after a overnight camping trip. Didn't like the option of using a portable potty or hiding behind a tree. I can use this in the privacy of my tent and avoids the hassle of leaving the tent in the middle of the night. I am looking forward to enjoying the outdoors more with this product!!!!

Comments about Sani-Fem Freshette Feminine Urinary Director:
I bought this product after a recommendation from the girly guides at Chicks with Picks because I was going to attend my very first ice climbing clinic. I was very hesitant to try it, but loved the idea of being able to go wherever, whenever, and not have to bare everything out in the open. I love that it is discreet and doesn't require anything but practice! An REI employee suggested I practice at home, which was a really good idea. It felt weird at first to allow myself to let it all go while standing, but once I got the hang of it I knew that this was one of my best purchases. I am no longer worried about traveling anywhere and always have my freshette packed and ready to go.
It's a little bit of a steep price, but the peace of mind of being able to have privacy is well worth it! I love it!

I am headed off to Africa for over a month...and will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro while I am there...I bought the Freshette today and have used it 3 times already at the toilet with no spills! And I didn't have to pull my pants down other than to make space for the device. It's awesome! I tried a different FUD before this and it totally didn't work for me. So, get the Freshette! You won't regret it!

I took this product with me on a camping trip to the interior of Antarctica. It was so handy to have in the cold temperatures, since it meant I didnt need to fully pull down all the layers. I would definitely recommend it.

My wife loves this thing! It makes the outdoor experience so much better. She was so happy to use it while backpacking in the snow a few weekends ago. At night, during the snow storm, she just used it with a bottle in the tent. One of the other girls had to get out in the middle of the night to dig a cat hole in 20 below weather.

I've used this for both backpacking and frequently when I fish (wading in isolated streams). It rocks. As long as you remember the basic premise (water, or any other fluid will NOT flow uphill), you're good to go. It takes a bit of practice and like other reviewers I'd advise trying it out with your hiking clothes before you try using it for a day + in the backcountry. It's small enough that it fits easily into a cargo pocket of hiking pants/shorts. Didn't have trouble with the plastic bag it came with (as some reviewers did), but it could just as easily fit into a small ziplock bag. Also no problem with smell, but I did rinse it (and the bag) out at least once a day with a small amount of water and that seems to do the trick.

OMG I cannot believe what a difference this little device makes in my over all backpacking experience. I have taken this on 3 different treks this year and could kick myself for not getting it sooner. There was no leaking which I was worried about so that was a big plus. Not having to squat to pee is so nice and much cleaner the stream is always a distance away from you and if you point is downhill never have to worry about anything splashing back on you. I also like that fact that in a pinch you can use it in your tent just have an empty bottle and you are good to go. No more freezing in the middle of the night just to relieve yourself.

Comments about Sani-Fem Freshette Feminine Urinary Director:
A must have for backpacking!! I grew up car-camping, using a camp seat and a huge shovel, or walking to the shower house when at a campground. Both are impractical for hiking and backpacking. The Freshette made it so easy to go on the go. Especially if wearing several layers, and exposes less skin to the elements (and passers by). I store mine in the sturdy zip-lock bag included. Make sure to pull the clear tube out as far as it will go, or urine will pool in the cup part. Until I can clean and dry it properly, I usually store it with a bit of toilet paper to absorb any urine I couldn't shake out at the end. I also used it in the tent at night with disposable water bottles that I reused. Since backpacking, I've used it to stand up at a pit toilet, and at night if the bathroom is too far away from where we're sleeping. We know of someone who keeps this in the car in case she's stuck in traffic for too long! I sometimes wish I stored it in my purse, but it's a little too bulky for my small purse.

Comments about Sani-Fem Freshette Feminine Urinary Director:
I eyed this product with great interest upon first encountering it, but it took me a while to have the guts to buy it. I purchased the Sani-Fem Freshette with an excitement that gained disapproving stares and raised eyebrows from strangers and friends alike. I bought it for my 8 day excursion on the Benton MacKaye Trail and AT with my boyfriend. He had mentioned that a previous girlfriend used a similar product on their trip to Yosemite, but had many qualms with the device. I bought one despite this anecdote, and decided that I was probably really going to like it. And I did! I love this thing! I would say that the only thing I envy about the male gender is when it comes down to squatting/peeing/falling in your own pee in the woods and this product eliminates that! Aha! Take that mother nature (said in good, spirited fun).
What I like about this product is the confidence you gain from using it. If you are hiking with the opposite sex you feel as if you're on the same level, equal, in bodily functions at least.
Warning TMI ahead: I could pee along side my boyfriend in comfort and confidence on the trail.
As for the other reviewers and their issues:
The pointed/slanted tube. I would not recommend chopping this off, it allows your urine to flow away from your body. Instead of removing the tube completely from the cup, try pushing it back up and through the cup, letting the tube rest inside. Doing this prevents the pointed tip from moving around. The suction between tube and cup makes puncturing the bag less likely.
I too ditched the bag it came with and ended up using my own ziploc bag.
The only thing that could be a problem is the smell. I haven't been hiking in a while and I've also never done extensive hikes so I didn't understand that you should pee quite often in order to stay hydrated. While using my weegee (that's what we named it) I noticed that the more I peed and the clearer my pee, the less the device smelled. You could use drinking water, but like Jax and Court said, "do you really want to waste it though?"
I think every woman should have this personally. I'm a fan :D

Comments about Sani-Fem Freshette Feminine Urinary Director:
My friend and I were doing the Camino in late summer and I had heard that toilets were not common along the trail, the walkers were abundant and if you did find a toilet it was not alway clean. This seemed like the perfect solution. When trying it at home I felt like the tubing should be longer. I had my husband get a longer piece of tubing for it. It worked much better. I had mine wrapped in papertowel and inside a gallon size ziploc by itself. This was to keep it from contaminating anything else in my pack. I tried to use it one time and it worked well but it was definately a foreign feeling to stand while urinating. Unfortunately after a few days of walking I had to reduce the weight of my pack. This little beauty doesn't weigh much on it's own but I had to get rid of unnecessary items and it was left behind. I do plan on replacing it in the future.
