Sleepy Creek Campground
This area of West Virginia is dominated by long north-south running ridges with valleys between them. You will learn this lesson well, coming to Sleepy Creek from Martinsburg. Sleepy Creek Lake itself is situated in a narrow valley between Third Hill Mountain and Sleepy Creek Mountain. Sleepy Creek and Third Hill Mountains are connected by a ridge named Lock-of-the-Mountain. This was originally a state forest. Before that it had been logged out and hunted out. Now, there is a lake rimmed in forested mountains filled with trails in the 23,000-acre area. The four campgrounds do not match the scenery, but they will do, especially for the price—$5. Hiking and fishing are the main activities for most tent campers. Check with the wildlife manager for the best and safest times to enter the woods here.
