Seneca State Forest
Dunmore, WV

Seneca State Forest
Seneca is West Virginia’s oldest state forest. It is also one of its quietest. Long ago, the Seneca Indians roamed the area—that’s how the forest received its name. Now, you can traverse the very hills and hollows that the Seneca walked and enjoy some more recent history at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Re-enter the modern era with a visit to the National Radio Observatory in nearby Green Bank. Finally, return to the small campground set in a handsome hollow. No doubt, it is an odd collection of attractions in the area, but it allows you to appreciate the evolution of West Virginia through the generations. You will also appreciate this campground. A Seneca ranger claims it is the finest in the state. He has a case. The campground is set along a pair of small mountain streams. Rhododendron crowds the creeks. Overhead, a mixed forest of white pine, hemlock, maple, and some oak shade the campsites. Steep hills stretch high around you.
