Red Creek Campground
Petersburg, WV

Red Creek Campground
This is one of the highest campgrounds in the state—perched at nearly 4,000 feet, atop the same high plateau that houses the Dolly Sods. The flora and climate are more like Canada than West Virginia. It is a whole different world from the “lowlands” below. The air cools significantly as you drive up the plateau. Snow is a possibility here eight months of the year. Freezing temperatures can occur anytime of the year. This is not to scare you off. Rather, Red Creek can be a refreshing break during the long, hot summer. But bring warm clothes all the same. Maybe you can keep warm by hiking, because the Dolly Sods is laced with trails. These trails pass through spruce thickets, northern hardwood forests, and many open areas known as plains. The forest here was once logged, and fires followed. In many areas the topsoil was burned to the rock below. These areas have remained treeless and add to the beauty and scenery. Vistas seem to be everywhere.
