Big Bend Campground
This campground lies in a dramatic setting. It is perched on a peninsula, around which the South Branch Potomac River nearly encircles the camping area. On the outside of the river, wooded cliffs rise tall to form a natural cathedral. Old-timers called this the Smoke Hole, because the mist rising from the deep gorge reminded them of smoke emerging from a cavity in the ground. The South Branch Potomac River attracts anglers vying for trout and smallmouth bass. Around the campground you’ll see folks fiddling with rods, hanging up waders, and telling fishing tales. But even if you don’t like to fish, this is a great destination. The setting can hardly be beat, and trails leave the campground and nearby vicinity. Also, the campground itself is attractive and heavy on campsite privacy.
