Snow Peak Cabin Trail
Republic, WA

Snow Peak Cabin Trail
This is one of my favorite hikes in the Kettles. It’s short and sweet, instantly putting you into the high country. This entire hike is within the White Mountain burn of 1988, so shade doesn’t exist. However, there are only 1500 feet of climbing and it is almost always windy along this trail. You’ll be mystified by the ghostly silver snags that line the way. Fireweed and aster paint the regenerating forest floor. Your dog will be captivated by the number of ground squirrels that have colonized the burnt zone. From the trailhead, waste no time in climbing. A few surviving trees provide some greenery. The trail is grassy here (planted after the fire to prevent erosion) so watch for ticks early in the season. After 2 miles of good trail you’ll come to a high point on the ridge, with good views south to Edds and Bald mountains. You’ll notice the Snow Peak cabin, too, just below Bald.
