There is a lot of watching to be done on the Olympic Peninsula: storm watching, whale watching, storm watching, bird watching, storm watching. From July through September, the region is relatively dry and temperatures get into the 70s. But the Olympic Peninsula is basically a temperate rain forest (nearly a million acres of it) and much of what there is to do there concerns water: fishing, boating, river rafting, beach walking, oyster harvesting. Even just going for a walk can mean wet feet. Good water-resistant boots and rain gear will keep you a happy camper. U.S. Highway 101 is the only way around the peninsula. The road makes a loop, starting just west of Olympia, but there are also enough side trips to keep you busy for days. Campgrounds included in this eTrail are: Big Creek, Bogachiel State Park, Brown Creek, Campbell Tree Grove, Coho, Collins, Coppermine Bottom, Cottonwood, Dungeness Forks, East Crossing, Elkhorn, Falls Creek, Falls View, Gatton Creek, Hamma Hamma, Hoh Oxbow, Klahowya, Lake Cushman State Park, Lena Creek, Lilliwaup, Lake Sylvia State Park, Melbourne, Minnie Peterson, Schafer State Park, South Fork Hoh, Upper Clearwater, Western Lakes, Willaby, and Willoughby Creek.
