James River Park Main Section Trails
Bisected lengthwise by a railroad track, the Main Section of James River Park retains a distinctly urban character. In addition to providing up-close views of boulders and islands along the banks of the James, this route passes under the Boulevard Bridge at its western terminus and crosses two lofty walkways that double as observation decks, offering views of the river and the city skyline. Richmond’s James River Park is comprised of ten noncontiguous parcels, which together significantly multiply the outdoor-recreation options of Richmond residents. Besides providing water access to anglers and paddlers, the almost 450- acre park offers waterside trails for walking, jogging, and cycling and is home to a surprising diversity of wildlife—a testament both to nature’s persistence within the modern city and an urbanite desire to escape into the outdoors.
