Cradled in the broad Appalachian Valley between Montour Ridge and Muncy Hills, this 966-acre Pennsylvania Power and Light (PP&L) preserve invites outdoor recreation and nature study. At the heart of the preserve sits 165-acre Lake Chillisquaque, an important waterfowl stopover on the Atlantic Flyway. Historically, the Muncy–Mahoning Indian Path passed through what is now the preserve. Today, a fine series of interlocking hiking trails welcome contemporary boots. Five hikes incorporate many of the trails and spotlight the preserve’s cultural and natural history. Interpretive panels and brochures help unfold the story. Special attractions: Visitor center with habitat dioramas; lake and wildlife ponds; meadow and riparian–valley woods; Devonian fossil pit; maple sugar shack; flowering shrubs, wildflowers, and pond lilies; wildlife sightings, with peak waterfowl migration in late March; colorful fall leaves.
