Hartwood Acres Tour
The mansion and its grounds compose a 629-acre equestrian estate designed in the lavish style of the wealthy during the early part of the 19th century. Any visitor is impressed with the beautifully designed mansion, stable complex, and grounds. The Hartwood Estate was initiated with a purchase of a 480-acre parcel of land on a crest overlooking the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. The buyer was Mary Flinn Lawrence, who inherited her wealth from her father, William Flinn. She hired architect Alfred Hopkins, who captured the essence of 16th-century architecture in the Tudor style of the mansion, combining it with the desires of the Lawrences who valued the land and its similarity to the Cotswold region of England. The result is a beautiful mansion of ornamentation, detailed motifs, and stone construction surrounded by a colorful garden and meticulously kept grounds, a stately equestrian stable complex, and woodlands.
