Lost Creek Campground

There’s one thing I need to say right away about Lost Creek Campground: Get there as early as possible and stake your claim. Bribe somebody if you have to. Here's the deal. Lost Creek is only one of two campgrounds inside the boundary of Crater Lake National Park. And with 16 tent-only sites—compared to Mazama’s 198 multipurpose sites—the odds are not in a latecomer’s favor. Even though Lost Creek is a bit off the beaten path, the area is swarming with people looking for overnight accommodations—roughly half a million visitors per year at last count. Many of them come from around the world. As acknowledgment of this, the park service offers trip-planning information in German, Spanish, and French on its Web site. I even encountered two German bicyclists who flew to Montana and were pedaling to Los Angeles via Crater Lake. I hope they made it. Nice to have so many cultures converging in such an unspoiled spot, actually. Natural beauty may make the best ambassador.
