Eel Creek Campground
Welcome to the heart of Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. If you’ve never ventured into this stunning sector of the Oregon coast, prepare yourself for an experience that you will not forget. Eel Creek is just one of many campgrounds that are clustered in the Florence/Reedsport/Coos Bay stretch of US 101. Aside from its vegetation-lush private sites, Eel Creek’s strongest selling point is the absence of off-road vehicle access to the dunes. Fortunately there are 32,000 acres of sand in Dungeness National Recreation Area, and the jeep trail stops short a mile or two south of Eel Creek, so there’s space for everyone here. If you want peace and quiet as part of your dunes experience, however, make sure to avoid hiking in an area where they rent dune buggies. Eel Creek backs up against some of the largest dunes in the 46-mile-long protected beach. Always shifting, always changing, some dunes that reach as high as 600 feet. Slog your way to the top of one of these monsters and look out over a most spectacular sight—sand, sand, and more sand. Swirled and sculpted in some places, smoothed and glistening like satin in others, rising and falling like patterns of the sea frozen in motion, the pale undulations radiate under a startlingly blue August sky.
