Umstead State Park — Company Mill Trail
What is it that makes Company Mill so popular? I wondered as I headed down the trail on a cold winter day, the overcast gray sky hinting of a rare Piedmont snow. One attraction strikes you right off: Just a few hundred yards into the hike, you can take a detour on the 0.3-mile Inspiration Trail. Budding dendrologists can spend a few minutes on this tree ID trail acquainting themselves with the major players in this mixed hardwood forest. Meet back up with Company Mill and you’ll continue over three small ridges to Crabtree Creek. Here, you’ll find the likely reason behind this trail’s popularity. At Crabtree are the remains of the old Company Mill.
