Mountains-to-Sea Trail — Folk Art Center to Craven Gap
With all the great hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway, why include a section within sight of rapidly growing Asheville? Because sometimes the après hike is equally important. You’ll notice several spur trails during the first mile or so. Most are short and the occasional diversion is inevitable. Indulge. Then return and continue north through a mature hardwood forest of poplar, oak, and hickory. After 1.25 miles, the trail crosses the Parkway and climbs into a more alpine environment, with rock outcrops, pines, summer-fragrant galax, and mountain laurel. Look down the mountain to your west and you’ll notice Asheville’s advance in the form of tract housing filling the valley.
