The Newport River begins near the Pocosin Wilderness area of Croatan National Forest as two blackwater streams: the Northwest Prong and Southwest Prong. The prongs join west of the town of Newport, and the river flows southeast, passing just south of Newport. About 3 miles northwest of Morehead City, the Newport River becomes a bay up to 2 miles wide. This bay has a water path to the Neuse River through Harlowe Creek, Harlowe Canal, and Clubfoot Creek. The Newport River flows to the eastern end of Bogue Sound, between Morehead City and Beaufort. This eTrail contains 1 section of the Newport River from Old Highway 70 (Carteret Co. 1247) access near Newport to Oyster Point access off Mill Creek Road (Carteret Co. 1154).
