Six Mile Run Reservoir Trails
The first thing you’ll probably ask yourself as you start this ride is “where’s the reservoir?” The answer is “right here” and “there really isn’t one … yet.” Confusing? Not really. According to the park brochure, development of this project won’t begin until around the year 2020, giving cyclists ample time to explore this hidden off-road resource in central New Jersey. In an earlier era, the area was cultivated by Dutch farmers who had migrated here from Long Island. Remnants from this time still exist in the numerous barns throughout the site. Preserved today as a multi-use recreation area (seasonal bow hunting is permitted) and watershed, it stands as a visual reminder of an agrarian landscape once common in the Raritan Valley area. In contrast to the nearby Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath, which is quite flat, this route uses rolling doubletrack (watch out for the groundhog holes!) as well as narrow singletrack with occasional trail obstacles and possible shallow water crossings.
