A quiet exploration of the islands and wooded shoreline between Portsmouth, New Castle, and Rye. We have paddled this route countless times—it is only about a mile from where we live in Portsmouth. There is nothing dramatic about the trek, and it never leaves civilization very far behind. Yet it is a wonderful trip, especially in summer when the wildlife returns to the area in large numbers—common terns, great blue herons, snowy egrets, and double-crested cormorants are almost guaranteed in midsummer. There is also a chance you will see white-tailed deer, harbor seals, and kingfishers, as well as the occasional red fox or red-tailed hawk. To top it off, you will paddle past a couple of historic buildings.
